Reciting Sūrat al-Kahf on Fridays

The hadith

«مَنْ قَرَأَ سُورَةَ الْكَهْفِ فِي يَوْمِ الْجُمُعَةِ أَضَاءَ لَهُ مِنَ النُّورِ مَا بَيْنَ الْجُمُعَتَيْنِ». وَ«مَنْ حَفِظَ عَشْرَ آيَاتٍ مِنْ أَوَّلِ سُورَةِ الْكَهْفِ عُصِمَ مِنَ الدَّجَّالِ».

The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Whoever recites Sūrat al-Kahf on Friday, light will shine for him between the two Fridays.' (al-Ḥākim, Bayhaqī). And: 'Whoever memorizes ten verses from the beginning of Sūrat al-Kahf will be protected from the Dajjāl.' (Muslim 809)

(Muslim 809)

al-Ḥākim; Bayhaqī; Muslim 809; al-Kahf 18

The story

The Companions used to recite al-Kahf on Friday so frequently that some who had memorized it would recite it back-to-back. Many of them memorized the first ten verses specifically for protection from the Dajjāl whose appearance was a regular topic in the Prophet's ﷺ teachings.

Why it's here

Sūrat al-Kahf is the Friday sūrah. Its recitation lights the believer's week. Its memorized opening protects from the greatest fitnah of the end times: the Dajjāl. The sūrah itself contains four stories of fitnah (cave, two gardens, Mūsā-Khiḍr, Dhu al-Qarnayn), each training the heart for resilience.

Try it today

Every Friday (or Thursday night, since the Islamic day begins at maghrib): recite Sūrat al-Kahf in full. It takes about 30-45 minutes. Memorize the first ten verses if you can; otherwise read them. The Sunnah is so well-attested that no Friday should pass without it.

In your day

Set a fixed Friday recitation time: after Fajr, before Jumʿah, after Jumʿah, or before Maghrib. Make it as fixed as the Friday prayer itself. Over months, the sūrah enters the heart and the protection accumulates.

A reflection to carry

Sūrat al-Kahf is the Sunnah's gift for the Friday: 30 minutes of recitation for a week of light. Take the trade.

Read the longer reflection

Among all sūrahs, al-Kahf has the most attested Friday Sunnah. The believer who establishes this practice receives weekly nur and protection against the greatest end-time fitnah. The sūrah's structure is also instructive: it contains four trial-narratives (faith, wealth, knowledge, power) that prepare the heart for every kind of test. Reciting it weekly is therapy as much as ibadah. May our Fridays never pass without al-Kahf, and may its light shine for us until al-Jumuʿah al-akbīr.
