Beautifying the Voice in Qur'an Recitation

The hadith

«زَيِّنُوا الْقُرْآنَ بِأَصْوَاتِكُمْ». وَ«لَيْسَ مِنَّا مَنْ لَمْ يَتَغَنَّ بِالْقُرْآنِ».

The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Beautify the Qur'an with your voices.' (Abū Dāwūd 1468; Nasā'ī 1015). And: 'He who does not recite the Qur'an melodiously is not of us.' (Bukhari 7527)

Svenska: Profeten ﷺ sade: 'Försköna Koranen med era röster.' (Abū Dāwūd 1468). Och: 'Den som inte reciterar Koranen melodiskt är inte av oss.' (Bukhari 7527)

Bukhari 7527; Abū Dāwūd 1468; Nasā'ī 1015

The story

Abū Mūsā al-Ashʿarī had a beautiful voice. The Prophet ﷺ heard him reciting one night and stood listening. The next day he said: 'O Abū Mūsā, you have been given a mazmār (flute) from the mazmārs of the family of Dāwūd.' (Bukhari 5048). The Prophet ﷺ noticed; he praised the beauty.

Why it's here

The Qur'an's beauty is partially conveyed through the reciter's voice. The Prophet ﷺ commanded beautification; he himself recited beautifully, and he praised Companions whose voices added beauty to the recitation. The believer is asked to engage his voice as part of the worship.

Try it today

Recite aloud, in your best voice. Take time to learn proper tajwīd; the rules preserve the original beauty. Listen to a good reciter daily; let your ear absorb the rhythm. Then read with that rhythm. Every believer's voice can be made beautiful in recitation, regardless of natural talent.

In your day

Phones contain world-class reciters. Use them. Listen at moderate volume during commute, kitchen, exercise. Your own recitation gradually adopts the rhythm.

A reflection to carry

Beauty in recitation honors the Speaker. The voice is the instrument; the Qur'an is the music; the heart is the audience.

Read the longer reflection

The Sunnah's emphasis on voice is profound. Allah's Book is not a script to be muttered; it is Speech to be voiced. The Prophet ﷺ commanded beautification because he understood: the believer's recitation reaches the heart partly through the ear. A monotone recitation is permissible; a beautified one is loved. Every believer can improve. Learn tajwīd. Listen often. Recite aloud at home. The voice is His instrument; let it carry His Speech beautifully. May Allah accept our recitations and beautify them where ours falls short.
