al-Ghanī al-Shākir · The Strength of the Grateful Rich
The disease
غَيْبَةُ الشُّكْرِ بِالْمَالِ
Ghaybat al-Shukr bi al-Māl
The story
Sulaymān ﷺ, the king-prophet given dominion over winds, jinn, and wealth beyond imagining, said: 'My Lord, grant me the ability to be grateful for Your blessing which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents, and to do righteous deeds that please You' (Q 27:19). He did not pray for more wealth; he prayed for the strength to be grateful for what he had. The richest man in history modeled the believer's true need.
Why it's named first
The Prophet ﷺ said the wealthy grateful man (al-ghanī al-shākir) is more difficult to be than the poor patient man (al-faqīr al-ṣābir). Wealth dulls gratitude through its constant presence. The disease is treating provision as default. The cure is naming the source with every meal, every paycheck, every transaction. The grateful rich are a rare class; the Prophet ﷺ singled them out.
In the Qur'an
لَئِن شَكَرْتُمْ لَأَزِيدَنَّكُمْ ۖ وَلَئِن كَفَرْتُمْ إِنَّ عَذَابِي لَشَدِيدٌ (إبراهيم 7). 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you; but if you deny, indeed My punishment is severe.' (Ibrāhīm 14:7)
In the Sunnah
'How wonderful is the believer's situation: all of it is good. If ease reaches him, he gives shukr, and it is good for him; if hardship touches him, he is patient, and it is good for him.' (Muslim 2999)
The cure
Name the Giver with every blessing. Before the meal: bismillāh. After the meal: alhamdulillāh. When the paycheck arrives: alhamdulillāh alladhī raza-qanī min ghayri ḥaulin minnī wa lā quwwah. When the deal closes: prostrate in shukr (sajdat al-shukr). When the bills are paid and there is something left: extra ṣadaqah immediately. Active gratitude.
What is at stake
Without shukr, niʿmah evaporates. The verse warns of severe punishment for the kufr al-niʿmah (denial of blessing). Allah's pattern is clear: gratitude attracts increase; denial accelerates loss.
A du'a for this day
«اللَّهُمَّ أَعِنِّي عَلَى ذِكْرِكَ وَشُكْرِكَ وَحُسْنِ عِبَادَتِكَ» (أبو داود 1522). 'O Allah, help me to remember You, to be grateful to You, and to worship You beautifully.'
The door of mercy
Al-Shākir, al-Shakūr. Allah names Himself the Appreciator: He appreciates even small gratitude from us. The exchange is exquisite.
A reflection to carry
Wealth in itself is morally neutral; its weight depends on its bearer. The grateful rich are a rare and beloved class. Aim for it.
Read the longer reflection
The Prophet ﷺ contrasted the grateful rich (al-ghanī al-shākir) with the patient poor (al-faqīr al-ṣābir), and named the first as the harder station. Why? Because wealth conceals the giver. The poor man's empty plate makes Allah's provision when it comes feel like a gift; the rich man's full plate makes it feel like normal. The disease is the normalization. The cure is active naming. Bismillāh before; alhamdulillāh after; ṣadaqah immediately for the excess; sajdah of gratitude for the unusual gift. The rich believer's day should be structurally more grateful than the poor believer's. Allah promised: if you are grateful, I will increase you. He did not promise it for the poor's gratitude alone; He promised it for all. May He make us of the grateful, whether rich or poor, and may our wealth become a vehicle of shukr, not a forgetfulness of the Giver.
A verse, a healing, and a Sunnah, every morning.
