The First Ten Days of Dhul-Ḥijjah

The hadith

«مَا مِنْ أَيَّامٍ العَمَلُ الصَّالِحُ فِيهَا أَحَبَّ إِلَى اللَّهِ مِنْ هَذِهِ الأَيَّامِ العَشْرِ». قَالُوا: وَلا الجِهَادُ? قَالَ: «وَلا الجِهَادُ، إِلاّ رَجُلٌ خَرَجَ بِنَفْسِهِ وَمَالِهِ وَلمْ يَرْجِعْ بِشَيْءٍ».

The Prophet ﷺ said: 'There are no days in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than these (first ten) days.' They said: 'Not even jihad?' He said: 'Not even jihad, except a man who went out with his life and wealth and returned with nothing.' (Bukhari 969)

Svenska: Profeten ﷺ sade: 'Det finns inga dagar där rättfärdiga handlingar är mer älskade av Allah än dessa (första tio) dagar.' (Bukhari 969)

Bukhari 969; al-Fajr 89:1-2

The story

Ibn ʿUmar would go to the marketplace in the 10 days and say takbīr loudly so others would say it. The community remembrance was structural.

Why it's here

Allah swears by these ten days in Sūrat al-Fajr ('by the dawn and ten nights'). The Prophet ﷺ named them the most beloved days for righteous action. Every fast, every dhikr, every ṣadaqah, every prayer in these days is multiplied. Many do not know this gift.

Try it today

From the 1st to the 10th of Dhul-Ḥijjah: increase Qur'an, dhikr, charity, voluntary fasting (1st to 9th), takbīr. Treat these 10 days like Ramadan's last 10. The reward structure is similar.

In your day

Modern life often passes Dhul-Ḥijjah unnoticed; only Eid is observed. Recover the 10 days. Set a structure: extra wird, daily ṣadaqah, fasts, takbīr.

A reflection to carry

The most beloved days for righteous deeds. Plan your year around them.

Read the longer reflection

The first 10 of Dhul-Ḥijjah parallel Ramadan's last 10 in spiritual weight. Allah swore by them; the Prophet ﷺ elevated them; the Sahaba marked them. May our Dhul-Ḥijjahs become annual peaks, second only to Ramadan in our spiritual investment.
