al-Wasāwis fi al-Dhikr · Wandering in Remembrance
The disease
الوَسَاوِسُ فِي الذِّكْرِ
al-Wasāwis fī al-Dhikr
The story
A Companion came to the Prophet ﷺ complaining of bad thoughts during prayer. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'That is pure faith.' Meaning: shayṭān only attacks where there is something to protect. The wasāwis are evidence of faith being targeted.
Why it's named first
Shayṭān's particular target is the believer in dhikr. He cannot prevent the tongue's movement; he attacks the heart's presence. Wasāwis (whisperings) flood the dhikr-doer with random thoughts, memories, plans. The dhikr becomes mechanical.
In the Qur'an
وَإِمَّا يَنزَغَنَّكَ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ نَزْغٌ فَاسْتَعِذْ بِاللَّهِ (الأعراف 200). 'And if there comes to you a suggestion from Satan, seek refuge in Allah.' (al-Aʿrāf 7:200)
In the Sunnah
«إِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ يَجْرِي مِنْ ابْنِ آدَمَ مَجْرَى الدَّمِ». 'Shayṭān flows through the son of Adam like blood.' (Bukhari 3281)
The cure
When wasāwis arise, do not panic. Say aʿūdhu billahi min al-shayṭān al-rajīm. Return to the dhikr. The Prophet ﷺ said the very struggle is rewarded: every time you return your attention, it counts. Do not abandon the dhikr because of wasāwis; that is shayṭān's goal.
What is at stake
The dhikr-doer who lets wasāwis run unchecked loses the dhikr's reward and slowly stops doing dhikr altogether.
A du'a for this day
«أَعُوذُ باللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ».
The door of mercy
Al-Muʿīdh (Refuge-Giver). Allah's refuge is requested precisely for this.
A reflection to carry
Shayṭān attacks the dhikr-doer specifically. Returning attention is the worship; do not abandon the dhikr.
Read the longer reflection
Every dhikr-doer struggles with wasāwis. Every prayer-maker struggles with distraction. The Companion who came to the Prophet ﷺ describing bad thoughts received a beautiful response: that is pure īmān. Shayṭān is targeting precisely because there is something worth taking. Do not abandon the dhikr because of the targeting. Seek refuge. Return. Persist. The persistence itself is the highest worship in that moment. May Allah grant us focused dhikr, and may He reward us doubly for the returning whenever we wander.
A verse, a healing, and a Sunnah, every morning.
