al-Inshighāl bi-l-Khalq · Preoccupation with Creation
The disease
الانْشِغَالُ بِالْخَلْقِ
al-Inshighāl bi al-Khalq
The story
ʿUmar would say: 'Spare us your social calls; we have hearts to mend.' He treated his heart's relationship with Allah as primary work, not residual.
Why it's named first
The heart has limited energy. Spent on people, it has less for Allah. The Prophet ﷺ described those who occupy themselves with others' affairs while their own wait. The Heart cluster's final third addresses where the heart's attention goes.
In the Qur'an
وَلا تُطِعْ مَن أَغْفَلْنَا قَلْبَهُ عَن ذِكْرِنَا وَاتَّبَعَ هَوَاهُ وَكَانَ أَمْرُهُ فُرُطًا (الكهف 28). 'Do not obey one whose heart We made heedless of Our remembrance and follows his desire and whose affair is excess.' (al-Kahf 18:28)
In the Sunnah
«مِنْ حُسْنِ إِسْلامِ المَرْءِ تَرْكُهُ مَا لا يَعْنِيهِ». 'Of the excellence of a person's Islam is his leaving what does not concern him.' (Tirmidhi 2317)
The cure
Audit your daily mental cycles. How many minutes are spent on others' problems, opinions, gossip, social posts vs. your own ibadah, dhikr, duʿāʾ? Tip the balance.
What is at stake
Heart-attention is a resource. Spent unwisely, the believer dies bankrupt of relationship with Allah while well-versed in others' affairs.
A du'a for this day
«اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَل الدُّنْيَا التَّي أَغْلَبُ عَلَيْهَا فَرَاغًا لِأَجْلِ لِقائِكَ».
The door of mercy
Al-Awwal, al-Ākhir. He is the First and the Last; the believer's first and last attention should match.
A reflection to carry
What you pay attention to compounds. Choose the recipient of your attention deliberately.
Read the longer reflection
The Heart cluster has been a journey through the soul's diseases. This final segment names attention as the most precious resource. The heart that pays attention to Allah grows toward Him; the heart paying attention to creation grows toward creation. The Sunnah's directive is simple: leave what does not concern you. Concentrate attention on Allah, on your akhirah, on your own correction. May Allah grant us economy of attention, and may we spend our hearts on what is most worth our spending.
A verse, a healing, and a Sunnah, every morning.
