The Sacrifice of ʿEid al-Aḍḥā (Uḍḥiyyah)
The hadith
«مَا عمِلَ ابْنُ آدَمَ يَوْمَ النّحرِ عَمَلاً أَحَبَّ إِلَى اللَّهِ مِنْ إِهْراقٍ الدّمِ». وَقَالَ اللَّهُ تَعالَى: ﴿فَصَلِّ لِرَبِّكَ وَانحَرْ﴾ (الكوثر 2).
The Prophet ﷺ said: 'No deed of the son of Adam on the Day of Sacrifice is more beloved to Allah than the spilling of blood (in sacrifice).' (Tirmidhi 1493). And Allah says: 'So pray to your Lord and sacrifice.' (al-Kawthar 108:2)
Svenska: Profeten ﷺ sade: 'Ingen handling på offerdagen är mer älskad av Allah än offrandet av blod.' (Tirmidhi 1493). Allah säger: 'Så be till din Herre och offra.' (al-Kawthar 108:2)
Tirmidhi 1493; al-Kawthar 108:2
The story
The Prophet ﷺ sacrificed two horned rams every year. He named one for his Ummah, one for his family. The Sunnah was constant; the meat was distributed; the household ate.
Why it's here
The Uḍḥiyyah is the believer's reenactment of Ibrāhīm's submission. On the 10th of Dhul-Ḥijjah, after the Eid prayer, the believer sacrifices (sheep, cow, or share of a camel) and distributes the meat: one-third for family, one-third for friends, one-third for the poor.
Try it today
Plan your uḍḥiyyah every year. If you can do it locally, do it; if not, donate to a trusted organization that will sacrifice on your behalf. Eat from the meat; give from it. Make this an annual non-negotiable.
In your day
Urban living removes us from the sacrifice itself; we can still participate through trustworthy services. The Sunnah's spiritual value is in the intention and the cost, not just the proximity to the act.
A reflection to carry
Uḍḥiyyah is the Eid's center. Plan, sacrifice, distribute.
Read the longer reflection
Allah named the sacrifice as the most beloved act of the Day. The history is rich: Ibrāhīm and Ismāʿīl, the ram from Paradise, the eternal commemoration. The Sunnah is the believer's annual reenactment of submission. May Allah accept our sacrifices and may our Eids be properly sealed by them.
