Three gifts in one verse: raḥmah (mercy), riḍwān (approval), and jannāt (gardens). The threefold tiding for the muhājirīn who left their homes for Allah.

Qur'an Qur'ān 9:21 (al-Tawbah)

Their Lord gives them good tidings of mercy from Him and approval, and of gardens for them wherein is enduring bliss.

Svenska: Deras Herre ger dem glada tidningar om barmhärtighet från Honom och välbehag, och om trädgårdar för dem där det finns evig glädje.

The story

Sūrat al-Tawbah 20-22 describe the muhājirīn who emigrated and the mujāhidīn who strove. Verse 21 announces their three-fold reward. The verse comes from Allah Himself announcing to His servants what awaits them. The classical scholars name this verse as one of the most beloved by the Companions, who saw themselves named in it.

In the language

Yubashshiruhum rabbuhum: their Lord GIVES THEM GOOD TIDINGS. The verb bashsharu is the joyful announcement, the news that opens the face. Bi-raḥmah min-hu wa riḍwān wa jannāt: three gifts in one announcement. Naʿīm muqīm: enduring bliss. Muqīm is permanent, settled, not transient.

Why this verse

SEAL of the Paradise cluster. The cluster has named gardens (V339), hospitality (V340), the inevitable promise (V341), the command to race (V342). The seal compresses everything: three gifts named together, with naʿīm muqīm as the final descriptor. The reward is mercy + approval + gardens + permanence.

Bring it into today

Day five. SEAL of the cluster. The Paradise arc has built the believer's hope structure. Tonight, sit with the three-fold tiding. Mercy. Approval. Gardens. All from Allah, all eternal. Believe each. The believer who lives with this tiding clear in his heart lives differently.

A reflection to carry

Notice the sequence. Mercy first: the door, the forgiveness. Approval second: the relationship restored. Gardens third: the destination. The order is the believer's journey. Mercy opens the way; approval makes the way joyful; gardens are the arrival. The Day will bring all three in the order the verse named.

Read the longer reflection

SEAL of the larger 30-day Tawbah-and-Paradise arc (V304-343). The arc has been the deepest theological journey: from the door of return (V304-308) through istighfār's openings, tawbah plus reform, mercy at maximum, the Names of the Forgiver, tawbah embedded in life's stations, tawbah-to-Jannah, and now the descriptions of Jannah. 40 days of verses. The believer who has walked through this 40-day arc has been transformed. The believer's hope, fear, motivation, and direction have been recalibrated. The seal is the three-fold tiding: mercy, approval, gardens. Today, end the arc as the Companions ended their listening to the Prophet's ﷺ duʿāʾ: with amīn. Yā Allāh, fulfill in us all that this 40-day arc promised. Give us Your mercy, Your approval, and Your gardens. Make us of the muhājirīn and the mujāhidīn who left and strove for You. Accept us by the verse's three-fold promise. Āmīn.
