Sābiqū: RACE. The verb is the language of competition. Allah does not command 'walk' toward Paradise; He commands RACE. The width of the Garden is the width of the heavens and earth.

سَابِقُوٓا۟ إِلَىٰ مَغْفِرَةٍ مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ وَجَنَّةٍ عَرْضُهَا كَعَرْضِ ٱلسَّمَآءِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ أُعِدَّتْ لِلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ وَرُسُلِهِۦ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ فَضْلُ ٱللَّهِ يُؤْتِيهِ مَن يَشَآءُ ۚ وَٱللَّهُ ذُو ٱلْفَضْلِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ
“Race toward forgiveness from your Lord and a Garden whose width is like the width of the heavens and the earth, prepared for those who believe in Allah and His messengers. That is the bounty of Allah, which He gives to whom He wills. And Allah is the possessor of great bounty.”

The story
Sūrat al-Ḥadīd (the Iron) emphasizes the believer's spiritual posture. Verse 21 stands as one of the most stirring calls in the Qur'an: race. The same command appears in 3:133 (sāriʿū ilā maghfiratin min rabbikum wa jannah ʿarḍuhā al-samāwāt wa-l-arḍ). The verses are doublets; the urgency is reinforced.
In the language
Sābiqū: race, compete, hasten. The verb is intensive; not just walk, RACE. ʿArḍuhā ka-ʿarḍi al-samāʾi wa al-arḍ: its width is like the width of the heavens AND the earth. The classical scholars debated: if the WIDTH is this vast, what is the LENGTH? The verse implies a Garden whose size exceeds comprehension.
Why this verse
Day four. The verse ACTIVATES the believer. The previous verses described Jannah; this verse commands the race. The believer is not just promised; he is challenged to compete. The Day's reward is for those who raced, not those who strolled.
Bring it into today
Today: when the choice between obedience and disobedience appears, RACE. Do not walk to the salah; rush. Do not delay the istighfār; voice it now. Do not postpone the kind word; speak it. The verb is the speed of the believer's response.
A reflection to carry
There is a teaching from the Companions on this verse. ʿUmar would race to his salah if he had been delayed; he would not allow a casual walk. He understood the verb sābiqū literally. The salaf would compete with each other in good deeds; if one gave a dinar, the next gave two; if one prayed two extra rakʿahs, the next prayed four. The race was real among them. We have settled for spectator-believer status. The verse demands competitor-believer.
Read the longer reflection
Imagine the architecture of the Garden. Its WIDTH is like the width of the heavens and the earth. The heavens alone are unfathomable; combined with the earth, the width is absolutely beyond imagination. And this is just the WIDTH; the depth is greater. The salaf would say: the lowest rank in Paradise is larger than the entire dunya; the highest rank exceeds the imagination of any creature. The believer who races toward this is racing for a Garden whose mere width contains every possibility. Today, do not race for promotion, for property, for fame; race for the Garden whose width contains all of these and infinitely more. The race is the believer's vocation. The reward is the verse's promise. Yā Allāh, give us the speed of the racers. Make our hearts compete in Your obedience as the Companions competed. Build for us a station in the Garden whose width Your verse describes. Āmīn.
