Khawf min Ghayri Allāh · Fearing Other-Than-Allah

The disease

الخَوْفُ مِنْ غَيْرِ اللَّهِ

Khawf min Ghayri Allāh

The story

Imām Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal endured imprisonment and beatings rather than say the Qur'an was created. When asked why he did not just say it and save himself, he said: 'If the scholars do not speak, what hope has the Ummah?' His fear of Allah outweighed his fear of caliph and torturer.

Why it's named first

Allah named the believers as those who do not fear blame from anyone (al-Mā'idah 5:54). The disease is the inversion: fearing the criticism of people more than the displeasure of Allah; fearing the loss of job more than the loss of barakah; fearing parents' anger over halal more than Allah's anger over haram.

In the Qur'an

فَلَا تَخْشَوْهُمْ وَاخْشَوْنِ (البقرة 150). 'So do not fear them; fear Me.' (al-Baqarah 2:150)

In the Sunnah

«لَا يَمْنَعَنَّ أَحَدَكُمْ هَيْبَةُ النَّاسِ أَنْ يَقُولَ بِالحَقِّ إِذَا رَأَهُ أَوْ شَهِدَهُ». 'Let not the fear of people prevent any of you from speaking the truth if he sees or witnesses it.' (Ahmad 11475)

The cure

Practice deliberate truth-saying in small matters. Speak when you would have stayed silent. Refuse when you would have agreed for fear. The muscle of truth-against-fear builds with practice. Replace each fear with: 'Allah is greater; what can people do?'

What is at stake

The believer ruled by fear of others becomes a tongue without truth, a hand without action, a heart without courage.

A du'a for this day

«اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ» تُردّدُ عند الخوف. Say 'Allāhu akbar' when fear of others arises; the takbīr shrinks the fear.

The door of mercy

Al-ʿAzīz (the Mighty). His might dwarfs every created power; the believer who fears Him fears nothing else.

A reflection to carry

The world's pressures are loud; Allah's right is louder still. Train the heart to hear which is louder.

Read the longer reflection

Khawf min ghayri Allah is the modern Muslim's quiet captor. We avoid difficult conversations, hide our religion in workplaces, soften our positions in mixed company. The cure is to remember the actual hierarchy: Allah is greater than any human pressure. The Companions practiced this; the Imams modeled it; the martyrs sealed it. May our fear of Him outweigh our fear of them, every time.

A verse, a healing, and a Sunnah, every morning.
