The 365 · Verses · Day 310 · Mercy
Hūd to his people: istighfār brings RAIN. Strength added to strength. The verse names worldly fruits of seeking forgiveness. Allah opens the heavens for the believer who knocks at His door with istighfār.
Qur'an Qur'ān 11:52 (Hūd)
“And O my people, ask forgiveness of your Lord and then repent to Him. He will send heavens with rain upon you in showers and increase you in strength added to your strength. And do not turn away as criminals.”
Svenska: O mitt folk, be er Herre om förlåtelse och vänd er sedan till Honom i ånger. Han skall sända himlen över er med strömmande regn och öka er styrka utanför er styrka. Och vänd inte ryggen till som brottslingar.
The story
Hūd ʿalayhi al-salām was sent to the people of ʿĀd, who were the strongest physically of the ancient peoples (described as al-baladāt al-ʿādiyyāt, the giant cities). They were experiencing drought. Hūd offered them the cure: istighfār. Rain. More strength. The simplest deal. They refused. The wind came that destroyed them. The verse remains.
In the language
Yursil al-samāʾa ʿalaykum midrāran: He will send the sky upon you in showers (midrār is intensive: pouring abundantly, continuously). Wa yazidkum quwwatan ilā quwwatikum: and He will INCREASE you in strength upon your strength. The increase is doubled: strength stacked on existing strength.
Why this verse
Istighfār is named with two specific worldly fruits: rain and strength. The verse anchors istighfār in real-world prosperity. The believer who makes istighfār daily is opening the heavens to literal sustenance. The connection between spiritual practice and earthly abundance is direct.
Bring it into today
Day two of the istighfār cluster. When you have a worldly need (financial, health, family), do not just hustle. Make ABUNDANT istighfār. The verse names the mechanism. The salaf would say: if rizq is delayed, increase your istighfār. They were following 11:52.
A reflection to carry
Imām al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī was approached by four people in one sitting. One complained of drought. One complained of poverty. One complained of being childless. One complained of weak crops. To each, he gave the same prescription: make istighfār. They were astonished. He cited this verse to them. The four worldly problems had the same spiritual cure. The connection between istighfār and earthly abundance is so direct that one practice opens four doors. We have separated the spiritual from the material in our minds. The Qur'an does not separate them.
Read the longer reflection
There is a beautiful pattern in the Qur'an: the prophets repeatedly offered their peoples istighfār as the cure for material crises. Nūḥ said it to his people in 71:10-12 (and the fruits named are even more specific: rain, wealth, sons, gardens, rivers). Hūd said it. Shuʿayb said it. The Prophet ﷺ said it. The pattern is the dīn's universal: when the worldly state is broken, the spiritual practice is istighfār. The earth's fertility is tied to the heart's softness. The sky's rain follows the eye's tears. We treat economic problems with economic solutions only; the Qur'an layers economic solutions ON TOP OF the istighfār foundation. So tonight, alongside whatever practical plans you have, add a fixed daily istighfār quota. 100 times. 500 times. 1000 times. The Prophet ﷺ said he himself made istighfār 70 (or 100) times a day (Bukhārī, Muslim) and he had no sins. We have many sins and we make istighfār rarely. Reverse the ratio. Watch the rain start. Yā Allāh, by Your name al-Ghaffār and Your promise in 11:52, send rain on our dry land and strength on our weak hands. Open the heavens we have not been knocking at. Āmīn.
