The 365 · Verses · Day 311 · Repentance
Min qarīb: soon. The verse names the tawbah Allah accepts: the SOON one. Not the deathbed one. Soon means now. The window is open; the speed matters.
Qur'an Qur'ān 4:17 (al-Nisāʾ)
“The repentance accepted by Allah is only for those who do wrong out of ignorance and then repent soon thereafter. It is those whom Allah will turn to in forgiveness, and Allah is ever Knowing and Wise.”
Svenska: Den ånger som Gud godtar är endast för dem som gör ont av okunnighet och sedan snart ångrar sig. Det är dem som Gud skall vända sig till med förlåtelse, och Gud är Vetande och Vis.
The story
Sūrat al-Nisāʾ addresses social and legal matters; the verses about tawbah land in the middle. Verse 17 names the accepted tawbah; verse 18 names the rejected (the deathbed tawbah and the unbeliever's tawbah at death). The two together set the parameters of the door.
In the language
Bi-jahālatin: out of ignorance. The classical scholars explain this does not mean intellectual ignorance; it means the foolishness of momentary desire (everyone who sins is, in that moment, ignorant of what he is doing to himself). Min qarīb: from close, soon, before death. The Prophet ﷺ interpreted soon: Allah accepts the tawbah of His servant as long as he does not start the death rattle (Tirmidhī). Soon is before the rattle.
Why this verse
The verse defines accepted tawbah. The condition is not the quality of the words; it is the SOONNESS of the return. The believer who keeps moving back toward Allah quickly is the believer whose tawbah is accepted. The longer the gap between sin and return, the more dangerous the state. Speed of return is the believer's protection.
Bring it into today
Day three of the cluster. Today: when you sin, return INSIDE THE HOUR. Do not wait for Ramadan. Do not wait for fajr. The verse names speed as the criterion. Speed is mercy.
A reflection to carry
There is a precise teaching here many miss. The verse names two conditions: ignorance (foolishness of the sin) and soonness (speed of the return). Most believers focus on the first (claiming we sinned out of weakness). The verse's weight is on the second (HOW QUICKLY did you return?). The Companions understood this. Anas radiya Allāhu ʿanhu said: you commit deeds you consider lighter than a hair, but in the time of the Prophet ﷺ we used to consider them destructive sins (Bukhārī). They returned to Allah within minutes of any slip; we let sins age into habits. Speed is the believer's habit.
Read the longer reflection
Picture two believers. Both commit the same sin: a sharp word with a family member at noon. Believer A makes istighfār the moment the sin ends, walks back to the family member, apologizes by mid-afternoon. The tawbah is min qarīb. Allah's promise activates. Believer B feels the same sin's weight, says 'I will make tawbah for it tonight at ʿishāʾ,' then ʿishāʾ gets busy, then 'I will tomorrow,' then the days roll, then the sin sinks beneath new sins. The tawbah is not min qarīb. The verse's promise does not activate the same way. Both believers said the same words eventually. Their fates diverged at the speed. So today, build the habit of micro-tawbah. The moment you slip, the moment you raise your voice, the moment your eye lingers, the moment your tongue gossips: stop in the same minute. Make istighfār right then. Do not wait for the formal salah. The verse's qarīb is the speed of the believer's protection. Yā Allāh, give us the speed of return. Do not let our delays become distance. Let our tawbah be the qarīb tawbah You promised to accept. Āmīn.
