Ṣabr is the only deed paid without account. Difficulty is the substrate; patience is the action; reward is unbounded.

قُلْ يَـٰعِبَادِ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ ٱتَّقُوا۟ رَبَّكُمْ ۚ لِلَّذِينَ أَحْسَنُوا۟ فِى هَـٰذِهِ ٱلدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةٌ ۗ وَأَرْضُ ٱللَّهِ وَٰسِعَةٌ ۗ إِنَّمَا يُوَفَّى ٱلصَّـٰبِرُونَ أَجْرَهُم بِغَيْرِ حِسَابٍ
“Say, '[God says], believing servants, be mindful of your Lord! Those who do good in this world will have a good reward, God's earth is wide, and those who persevere patiently will be given a full and unstinting reward.' (Abdel Haleem)”

The story
Ibn Kathīr: the verse comes in the context of encouragement to migrate (the earth is wide) when religion-practice is constrained. The patient who endure such situations are promised the unbounded reward. Modern application: any patience-context (illness, family difficulty, professional persecution for religion) falls within the verse's promise.
In the language
Bi-ghayri ḥisāb (without account/measure) is the structurally severe phrase. The Quran uses this phrase only for specific divine promises (ṣabr-reward, certain forms of rizq, certain forms of forgiveness). The classical scholars: this phrase indicates unbounded reward beyond the normal divine accounting-system.
Why this verse
Q 39:10 names the structurally severe promise: the patient (aṣ-ṣābirūn) will be given their reward without account (bi-ghayri ḥisāb). All other deeds are recompensed by accounting (each deed weighed, multiplied 10x to 700x); patience-deeds are recompensed without measure. The structural implication: ṣabr is the only category of action whose reward is structurally unbounded.

When facing prolonged difficulty (chronic illness, difficult marriage, professional struggle, parental challenge), recall this verse: the patience required IS itself the structural mechanism for unbounded reward. The difficulty is the substrate; the ṣabr is the act; the reward is bi-ghayri ḥisāb.

The difficulty itself becomes a divine gift, because it is the substrate on which the unbounded-reward action operates.
