al-Riyāʾ al-Khafī · Subtle Showing-Off
The disease
الرّياء الخفيّ
al-Riyāʾ al-Khafī
The story
When ʿUmar saw young men walking slowly and bowing their heads in piety, he hit them with his stick and said: 'Do not kill our religion.' He suspected display; he wanted internal piety, not external posturing.
Why it's named first
The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Riyāʾ in this Ummah will be more hidden than the crawl of a black ant on a black rock on a dark night.' (Ahmad 19606). The subtle form: a slight increase in worship when watched; a tone-shift in dhikr when a brother enters; the secret pleasure when someone notices our piety. The cluster's penultimate disease is this most-hidden one.
In the Qur'an
فَوَيْلٌ لِلْمُصَلِّينَ الَّذِينَ هُمْ عَن صَلاتِهِمْ سَاهُونَ الَّذِينَ هُمْ يُرَاءُونَ (الماعون 4-6). 'Woe to those praying ones who are heedless of their prayer, who are showy.' (al-Māʿūn 107:4-6)
In the Sunnah
«ألا أخبركم بما هو أخوف عليكم عندي من المسيح الدجّال?» قلنا: بلى. قال: «الشرك الخفيّ: أن يقوم الرجل فيصلّي، فيزيّن صلاته لما يرى من نظر رجل». 'Shall I not inform you of what I fear for you more than the Antichrist? The hidden shirk: that a man stands and prays, then beautifies his prayer because of what he sees of another's gaze.' (Ibn Majah 4204)
The cure
Worship in private. The Sahaba's private worship was greater than their public. Recover that. Pray nawafil hidden. Give ṣadaqah hidden. Make dhikr in the heart, silent. The hidden worship cures the hidden riyāʾ.
What is at stake
Subtle riyāʾ empties the deed without the doer's knowing. The Day will reveal what was for Allah and what was not.
A du'a for this day
«اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ أَنْ أُشْرِكَ بِكَ وَأَنَا أَعْلَمُ، وَأَستَغْفِرُكَ لِمَا لا أَعْلَمُ».
The door of mercy
Al-Baṭin (the Inner). Allah is the One who sees what is hidden; the believer's hidden worship reaches Him.
A reflection to carry
The Prophet ﷺ feared this more than the Antichrist for us. Treat it accordingly.
Read the longer reflection
Subtle riyāʾ is the disease the Sahaba feared most. The Prophet ﷺ named it 'more hidden than a black ant on black rock on a dark night.' Cure it with hidden worship: pray nawafil alone, give in secret, dhikr silently. Let your private worship dwarf your public. May Allah grant us the audience of one and save us from the hidden shirk.
