Tawbah bilā ʿAmal · Words Without Walking
The disease
التَّوْبَةُ بِلَا عَمَلٍ صَالِحٍ
Tawbah bilā ʿAmal Ṣāliḥ
The story
A Companion came to the Prophet ﷺ repeatedly with the same complaint: he kept falling into the same sin. The Prophet ﷺ kept telling him to repent. After multiple cycles, the man understood: the Prophet ﷺ was teaching him not the words of tawbah but the practice of immediately repenting AND making one small change each time. Over months, the small changes added up; the sin's grip loosened. (paraphrased from multiple narrations on tawbah)
Why it's named first
Al-Furqān contains the full prescription: tawbah, then īmān, then ʿamal ṣāliḥ. Only when all three combine does Allah promise the substitution of bad deeds with good. The disease is to perform only the first: say the words, mean them in the moment, then return to the same behavior tomorrow. The Money believer who repents from ribā but does not change his banking is in this disease.
In the Qur'an
وَمَن تَابَ وَعَمِلَ صَالِحًا فَإِنَّهُ يَتُوبُ إِلَى اللَّهِ مَتَابًا (الفرقان 71). 'And whoever repents and does righteous deeds, he indeed turns to Allah with true turning.' (al-Furqān 25:71). The phrase 'true turning' (matābā) names the genuine article; everything else is a partial.
In the Sunnah
«النَّدَمُ تَوْبَةٌ». 'Regret is repentance.' (Ibn Majah 4252) But the scholars added: regret that does not produce a change of behavior is not yet complete tawbah. The four conditions of tawbah, as scholars elaborated: cessation, regret, resolve not to return, and (in case of rights of others) restitution.
The cure
After every spoken tawbah for a Money sin, define ONE behavioral change that begins today: close the account, return the amount, change the practice, alert the wronged. The change is the validation of the tawbah. Without the change, the words evaporate.
What is at stake
Tawbah without action becomes a verbal ritual. The believer says the words, but his life is unchanged. The Day will weigh the action, not the verbal recitation.
A du'a for this day
'O Allah, make my words match my walking. Do not let me say tawbah while my feet are still on the path of the sin.'
The door of mercy
Al-Tawwāb. Matābā (the verbal noun in 25:71) names the TRUE turning, the kind that involves the whole body.
A reflection to carry
Allah designed tawbah as a triple: turn, believe, act. The triple is one. To do less is to claim tawbah without giving it.
Read the longer reflection
The matābā of 25:71 is one of the deepest words in the Qur'an's vocabulary of return. It is the verbal noun, the abstract noun of pure turning. It implies a turning that is not partial, not verbal-only, not momentary. It involves the whole body in motion. The believer who has truly turned has moved his behavior, not only his speech. The verse pairs tawbah with ʿamal ṣāliḥ (righteous action) as one phrase, joined by the conjunction 'wa'. The two are not sequential; they are simultaneous. To repent is to begin acting differently. To act differently is to be repenting. When they separate, the tawbah is incomplete. Money sins are especially demanding here because they leave a behavioral trail: accounts, contracts, salaries. A real tawbah from a Money sin will be visible in the next bank statement. May Allah grant us tawbah whose walking is louder than its talking.
A verse, a healing, and a Sunnah, every morning.
