Atbāʿ al-Sayyiʾah bi-l-Sayyiʾah · Sin Follows Sin

The disease

إِتْبَاعُ السَّيِّئَةِ بِالسَّيِّئَةِ

Itbāʿ al-Sayyiʾah bi-l-Sayyiʾah

The story

A man at the time of ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb was caught cheating in trade. He admitted, returned the money, and went home. The next morning he came to ʿUmar with a generous donation for the army. ʿUmar smiled and said: 'You have understood the verse.' The man had followed his sin with a good deed; ʿUmar saw the THEN at work.

Why it's named first

The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Follow a bad deed with a good deed; it will erase it' (Tirmidhi 1987). The disease is the opposite: following a Money wrong with another Money wrong, lying to cover a lie, deceiving to cover a deceit. The verse in al-Aʿrāf promises forgiveness to those who do wrong, then repent and believe. The condition is the THEN: thumma tābū. The disease replaces 'thumma tābū' with 'thumma kadhdhabū' (then they lied to cover it).

In the Qur'an

'And those who did bad deeds, then repented after that and believed, indeed your Lord, after that, is Forgiving, Merciful.' (al-Aʿrāf 7:153)

In the Sunnah

«اتَّقِ اللَّهَ حَيْثُمَا كُنْتَ، وَأَتْبِعِ السَّيِّئَةَ الْحَسَنَةَ تَمْحُهَا، وَخَالِقِ النَّاسَ بِخُلُقٍ حَسَنٍ». 'Fear Allah wherever you are; follow a bad deed with a good deed, it will erase it; and deal with people with beautiful character.' (Tirmidhi 1987)

The cure

The instant you have committed a Money wrong, do not extend it. Stop. Do a small good deed in its wake: a small charity, a kind word to a wronged person, a moment of dhikr. The good after-deed becomes the THEN of the verse. The verse's mercy waits for the THEN.

What is at stake

Sin chained to sin becomes habit. Habit chained becomes identity. Identity makes the believer one of the 'khaṭṭābun li-l-maʿaṣiyah' (those who keep returning to disobedience). The verse names the off-ramp: thumma tābū.

A du'a for this day

Whenever you slip in a Money matter, immediately whisper: 'astaghfirullāh al-ʿaẓīm', then perform a small good act, then say bismillāh on the next decision.

The door of mercy

Al-Raḥīm. The verse repeats the attribute as the seal: 'min baʿdihā la-ghafūrun raḥīm' (after that, surely Forgiving, Merciful). The mercy is FOR those who break the chain of bad deeds.

A reflection to carry

After a wrong, do not double down. Pause. Repent. Follow with good. The verse's mercy opens precisely at the pause.

Read the longer reflection

There is a kind of pride that turns a small wrong into a large one. We cheated by a little; we will not return because that would 'admit' the wrong. So we add lying. We refused to pay zakat by a margin; now we cannot admit because it would imply previous years were wrong. So we add concealment. The verse breaks this trap. Allah names the path forward: do bad, then turn back, then believe. Three steps. The bad happens; the believer is human. What separates the believer from the sinner-stuck is the THEN. Stop. Repent. Believe afresh that Allah is Raḥīm. May we never let one Money wrong become two; may every slip end with a step back toward Him.

A verse, a healing, and a Sunnah, every morning.
