Closing the Door, Covering the Vessel Before Sleep

The hadith

«أَغْلِقُوا الْأَبْوَابَ، وَأَوْكِئُوا الْأَسْقِيَةَ، وَخَمِّرُوا الْآنِيَةَ، وَأَطْفِئُوا الْمَصَابِيحَ، فَإِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ لَا يَفتَحُ غَلْقًا، وَلَا يَحُلُّ وِكَاءً، وَلَا يَكْشِفُ إِنَاءً».

The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Close the doors, tie the water-skins, cover the vessels, and put out the lamps. Indeed, shayṭān does not open a locked door, untie a knot, or uncover a vessel.' (Bukhari 5623; Muslim 2012)

(Bukhari 5623; Muslim 2012)

The story

Jābir narrated that the Prophet ﷺ was particular about this. He used to walk through the house himself. He said the bismillāh sealed the door from shayṭān's access. The Companions adopted the practice; their families slept under it for generations.

Why it's here

Before sleep, the Prophet ﷺ commanded a small set of household actions: close doors, tie containers, cover vessels, put out lamps. Each was Sunnah and each had a stated protection: shayṭān cannot open what was closed in Allah's Name. The believer's household enters the night under His protection through these small acts.

Try it today

Before sleeping, walk through your home and check: front door locked (and say bismillāh); food and water covered (the Prophet ﷺ said even by a stick across the top); any flames or unsafe heat extinguished; children safely in bed; lights off in unused rooms. Each act is a Sunnah, each takes 30 seconds, all together less than 5 minutes.

In your day

Modern equivalents: turn off the stove, unplug what should be unplugged, lock the door, set the alarm, ensure the smoke detector is functional. The Sunnah's purpose remains: the believer's home enters the night prepared and protected.

A reflection to carry

Small Sunnahs structure the believer's night. The home is prepared, the body is prepared, the soul is prepared. Sleep enters a house already at peace.

Read the longer reflection

There is a comprehensive Sunnah of bedtime that the Prophet ﷺ structured: wudu, dhikr, position, recitation, AND household preparation. The household preparation is too often forgotten. The Prophet ﷺ was specific: close doors with His Name, cover food and drink, put out lamps. The shayṭān cannot undo what was sealed in His Name. There is profound wisdom in this practical theology: spiritual protection is structured through physical actions. Lock the door; say His Name; the protection is invoked. May our households become bismillāh-sealed at night, and may our families sleep under that quiet protection.
