The 365 · Verses · Day 322 · Mercy
A-lam yaʿlamū. Do they not know? Allah's question to those still hesitating at the door. He is named as the One Who Accepts. The hesitation is the disease, not the doubt of His acceptance.
Qur'an Qur'ān 9:104 (al-Tawbah)
“Do they not know that it is Allah who accepts repentance from His servants and takes the charities, and that it is Allah who is the Accepting of repentance, the Merciful?”
Svenska: Vet de inte att det är Gud som tar emot ånger från Sina tjänare och tar emot gaorna, och att det är Gud som är den som tar emot ånger, den Barmhärtige?
The story
Sūrat al-Tawbah (the surah of tawbah) is the only surah in the Qur'an that does not begin with bismillah. It is the surah of accountability after the Tabūk campaign. Verse 104 lands in a passage about those who confessed their sins (including the three who stayed behind, V323 in our cluster). The verse is Allah's reassurance: He accepts.
In the language
A-lam yaʿlamū: do they not know? The interrogative form is mercy-as-questioning. Allah is named as the one who BOTH accepts tawbah AND takes the ṣadaqāt. The pairing is intentional: the believer who has wronged with his soul AND with his wealth can return through both gates. Tawbah cleanses the soul; ṣadaqah cleanses the wealth.
Why this verse
The verse names Allah explicitly as the Accepter and the Taker of charities. The two are paired. The believer whose past wealth was corrupt can return through charity; the believer whose past acts were wrong can return through tawbah. Both gates remain open in the same verse.
Bring it into today
Day five and seal of the mercy-at-maximum sub-cluster... actually no, V323 is the seal of this batch. Today's verse is the FOURTH of the batch, deepening the mercy. Today: pair every tawbah with a charity. The two gates open together.
A reflection to carry
Notice the verse's pairing: He accepts tawbah AND He takes charities. The two are listed together because they cleanse different things. Tawbah cleanses the heart's wrong; ṣadaqah cleanses the wealth's source. The believer who built wealth in haram ways cannot just say astaghfir Allāh; he must DIVEST. The believer who treated others wrongly cannot just say astaghfir Allāh; he must REPAIR. The verse names the divine acceptance of both repair channels.
Read the longer reflection
There is a Sunnah of pairing every significant tawbah with a charity. The Prophet ﷺ said: ṣadaqah extinguishes sin as water extinguishes fire (Tirmidhī, ḥasan). The image is exact: the charity is the water, the sin is the fire. The two interact directly. So when you make tawbah for a specific sin, give a specific ṣadaqah. The two gates open together. Allah's verse 9:104 promises both intakes. The hesitation we sometimes feel ('did Allah accept my tawbah?') is met by the verse's question ('do they not know?'). He is the Accepter; the proof is in His Name; the hesitation is the disease of weak certainty in His promises. So tonight, pair your tawbah with a charity. Give something. Even a small amount. Watch the two gates open. Yā Allāh, who accepts tawbah from servants and takes our charities, accept ours. Forgive our hesitations and replace them with certainty in Your promises. Āmīn.
