Sleeping in a State of Wudu (the Angel Who Stays the Night)
The hadith
The Prophet ﷺ said: 'When you come to your bed, perform wudu as you would for prayer.' (Bukhari 247, Muslim 2710). And in another hadith: 'Whoever sleeps in a state of purity, an angel stays the night within his garment; whenever he wakes during the night, the angel says: O Allah, forgive Your servant so-and-so, for he has slept in a state of purity.'

The story
Muʿādh ibn Jabal lived this Sunnah. He used to say: 'I do not sleep except after I have performed wudu and read what I can of the Qur'an; for if my Lord takes my soul during sleep, I will meet Him in the state I would have wanted.' This is the deeper logic: sleep is a small death; the believer dies in wudu.
Why it's here
Sleeping in wudu means an angel is appointed to your night. Every time you stir, the angel asks Allah's forgiveness for you. This is a Sunnah of accumulating maghfirah while unconscious. The cost is two minutes of wudu before bed; the reward is unmeasurable.
Try it today
Make wudu the last act before lying down. If you have already lain down and remembered, do not let it pass: get up and renew. Train yourself so that wudu becomes part of your bedtime routine like brushing teeth.
In your day
We have so much we need to do before bed (charge phone, set alarm, turn off lights). Add wudu to the list. Make it sequence: wudu, dhikr, recitation, lie down on right side, sleep. The body learns within weeks.
A reflection to carry
An angel is assigned to the bed of the believer who slept in wudu. He asks Allah's forgiveness every time you stir. The deal is generous.
Read the longer reflection
There is a deep symmetry in this Sunnah. The believer prepares for prayer with wudu; he prepares for sleep with the same. Why? Because sleep is described in the Qur'an as a death (39:42). If death meets him in his sleep, he is found in wudu. If he wakes for fajr, he is already prepared. Either way, his condition is one of readiness. The angel-companion in the hadith is the Sunnah's bonus: extra forgiveness deposited through the night. May we never sleep without it, and may our nights become not lost hours but earning hours through the simple Sunnah of two minutes of water before the pillow.
