Purify Your Clothing (al-Thiyāb)
The hadith
Allah said: 'O you wrapped in your garments, arise and warn, and your Lord magnify, and your clothing purify.' (al-Muddaththir 74:1-4). The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Allah is beautiful and loves beauty; Allah is pure and loves purity; clean and loves cleanliness.' (Muslim 91; Tirmidhi 2799)
Svenska: Allah sade: 'O du, höljd i din mantel, stå upp och varna, och förstora din Herre, och rena dina kläder.' (al-Muddaththir 74:1-4). Profeten ﷺ sade: 'Allah är vacker och älskar skönhet; Allah är ren och älskar renhet; ren och älskar renlighet.' (Muslim 91; Tirmidhi 2799)
al-Muddaththir 74:4; Muslim 91; Tirmidhi 2799
The story
When Sūrat al-Muddaththir was revealed, the Prophet ﷺ was wrapped in his cloak from the awe of the encounter with Jibrīl. Allah called him out of the wrap and named four commands: arise, warn, magnify your Lord, purify your clothing. The order is striking. The clothing-purification is named alongside warning and tasbīḥ. It is part of the original commission. The Messenger ﷺ knew from the beginning: a believer's exterior is part of his testimony.
Why it's here
Among the very first commands of revelation, before fasting was made obligatory, before the major commands of zakāh and ḥajj, Allah named the cleansing of clothing: wa-thiyābaka fa-ṭahhir. The outer shell of the believer is asked to match the cleanliness of his inner state. The Prophet ﷺ taught that beauty and purity are loved attributes of Allah Himself; to be His Messenger required to embody both.
Try it today
Wear clean clothing for prayer; do not pray in clothes stained with najāsah (urine, blood, alcohol). Change before Jum'ah. Do not let dirt accumulate as identity. If you cannot afford new clothes, wash what you have until the fibers shine. The Prophet ﷺ once mended his own sandal with his own hand; clean was never about money.
In your day
In gym, in commute, in cubicle, the believer's clothing carries his standing-with-Allah. We do not need to be lavish; we need to be respectful of His company. Old clothes can be clean. Worn clothes can be folded. The believer who walks into a meeting clean carries Sunnah on his shoulders; the believer who walks into prayer clean carries acceptance.
A reflection to carry
There is a quiet teaching in the order of the commands. Before any of the rituals were imposed, Allah named the cleanliness of clothes. The believer's body and what wraps it are the visible argument for the unseen. Make the argument legible.
Read the longer reflection
The verse 'wa-thiyābaka fa-ṭahhir' has been read literally (wash your clothes), spiritually (purify your inner state which the clothes symbolize), and morally (do not associate with what stains, like wine or slander). All three readings are true. The Prophet ﷺ embodied all three. He carried himself like one bathed in light, his clothes simple but always clean, his demeanor warm but always pure, his company carefully kept. The early Companions used to scent themselves before going to him; he did not require it of them, but his presence inspired it. Cleanliness in this Sunnah is not a luxury. It is the believer's signature: a body cared for, a fabric washed, an inner state matching the outer one. May Allah accept our prayer in our cleanest hours, and forgive what we wore when we did not know.
