The Three Surahs of Protection, Three Times Morning and Evening

The hadith

The Prophet ﷺ said to 'Uqbah ibn 'Amir: 'Recite Qul huwa Allahu ahad and the two mu'awwidhatayn (al-Falaq and an-Nas) when you reach evening and when you reach morning, three times each. They will suffice you against everything.' (Sunan Abi Dawud 5082, Sunan at-Tirmidhi 3575, classed hasan sahih; narrated by 'Uqbah ibn 'Amir.)

Sunan Abi Dawud 5082, Sunan at-Tirmidhi 3575 (hasan sahih, 'Uqbah ibn 'Amir); Sahih al-Bukhari 5017 ('A'ishah, the night recitation)

The story

'A'ishah ra. narrated that whenever the Prophet ﷺ went to bed, he would join his palms together, breathe into them, and recite al-Ikhlas, al-Falaq, and an-Nas, then wipe with them what he could reach of his body, starting with his head and face and the front of his body. He would do this three times. (Sahih al-Bukhari 5017.) The same surahs, the same threefold structure, applied as protection at night.

Why it's here

The three surahs together (al-Ikhlas, al-Falaq, an-Nas) form the Quran's compressed protection: al-Ikhlas declares tawhid, al-Falaq seeks refuge from external evil (creation, darkness, sorcery, envy), an-Nas seeks refuge from internal evil (the whispers of jinn and humans). Reciting all three, three times, morning and evening, is one of the most documented adhkar routines in the Sunnah.

Try it today

1. Recite each of the three surahs three times after Fajr (and again after Maghrib for evening).
2. The total time is about 90 seconds. Do not rush; the meaning is the protection.

3. If you forget the morning recitation, the hadith of recovery (Day 18 principle) suggests reciting before Zuhr.

In your day

The morning protection takes 90 seconds. The Prophet ﷺ named it as sufficient against everything. The cost-to-benefit ratio is unmissable. Build the habit.

A reflection to carry

Reciting al-Ikhlāṣ, al-Falaq, an-Nās three times morning and evening. The Prophet ﷺ: 'Recite each of them three times in the morning and three times in the evening; they will suffice you against everything.' (Abū Dāwūd 5082, classed ṣaḥīḥ.)

Read the longer reflection

The Muʿawwidhāt (the seekers-of-refuge surahs) are the structural protection-package. al-Ikhlāṣ establishes tawḥīd; al-Falaq seeks refuge from external evils; an-Nās seeks refuge from internal whispering. Together they are the Prophetic-named comprehensive protection. Cure: integrate into morning and evening adhkār; recite each three times audibly with awareness of meaning; pair with the Prophetic blowing-into-hands and wiping-over-body practice that ʿĀʾishah ra. preserved (Bukhārī 5017). The structural daily protection is severe in named coverage; missing the recitation produces a noticeable spiritual exposure-feeling.
