Drinking Water in Three Breaths, Seated
The hadith
كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَتَنَفَّسُ فِي الْإِنَاءِ ثَلَاثًا
Anas ibn Malik narrated: 'The Prophet ﷺ used to take three breaths while drinking (i.e., he would breathe outside the vessel three times during the drink).' (Sahih al-Bukhari 5631, Sahih Muslim 2028.) The Prophet ﷺ also said: 'Do not drink in one gulp like a camel; drink in two or three sips.' (Sunan at-Tirmidhi 1885, classed hasan.)
Svenska: Anas ibn Malik berättade: 'Profeten ﷺ brukade andas tre gånger när han drack.' Och: 'Drick inte i en klunk som en kamel; drick i två eller tre sipsar.'
Sahih al-Bukhari 5631, Sahih Muslim 2028 (Anas, three breaths); Muslim 2024 (sitting); Tirmidhi 1885 (do not drink like a camel); al-Tabarani Awsat (the three benefits)
The story
The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Verily, in three breaths during a drink, there is satisfaction, quenching, and health.' (Reported in al-Tabarani's Awsat.) The medical observation aligns with modern studies on hydration and digestive load.
Why it's here
The Prophet ﷺ taught the drinking pattern in detail: sit (Muslim 2024 forbids drinking standing in most circumstances), take three breaths between sips, do not breathe into the vessel itself, drink with the right hand. The hadith is unusual in the level of physical detail; modern science has independently confirmed the digestive and metabolic benefits of slow seated drinking.
Try it today
1. Sit when drinking water (and most other drinks).
2. Take three sips, with breaths outside the vessel between each.
3. Drink with the right hand.
4. Begin with Bismillah, end with Alhamdulillah.
In your day
Modern hydration is often a single chugged glass. The Sunnah inverts this. Three slow sips, seated, breathing between. The body absorbs better, and the act becomes 'ibadah.
A reflection to carry
Drinking water in three sips, sitting. The Prophet ﷺ: 'Do not drink in one gulp like a camel; rather, drink twice or thrice. Mention the name of Allah when starting and praise Him after finishing.' (Tirmidhī 1885.) Sit while drinking; the Prophet ﷺ rebuked drinking standing.
Read the longer reflection
The structural pattern: bismi-llāh before, three sips with breaks, al-ḥamdu lillāh after, sitting. Modern science suggests drinking-while-standing reduces hydration uptake; the Prophetic guidance aligns. Cure: build the habit of always sitting to drink water; pause between sips; recite the Prophetic duʿāʾs. The Companions practiced this consistently. Modern grab-and-go drinking is structurally counter-Sunnah. The cost: 30 seconds extra per drinking-occasion. The benefit: structural Prophetic alignment plus the named hydration-and-digestion benefits.
