Reciting the Duʿā' on Leaving the House

The hadith

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ، تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللَّهِ، وَلَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ

The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Whoever says, when leaving his home: Bismillāh, tawakkaltu 'alā Allāh, wa lā hawla wa lā quwwata illā billāh (In the name of Allah, I rely on Allah; there is no power and no strength except by Allah), it will be said to him: You are guided, you are sufficed, you are protected, and Shaytan will move away from him.' Sunan at-Tirmidhi 3426, Sunan Abi Dawud 5095, classed sahih; narrated by Anas ibn Mālik.

Sunan at-Tirmidhi 3426, Sunan Abi Dawud 5095 (sahih, Anas ibn Malik); cross-ref Abu Dawud 5096 (entering du'a')

The story

The Prophet ﷺ taught this du'a' as a comprehensive protection for the day's first transition. Companions narrated saying it daily. Imam an-Nawawi, in his al-Adhkār, treated it as one of the most essential adhkār to memorize.

Why it's here

The du'a' is one of the most documented protective du'a's in the Sunnah. It contains three theological motions: invoking Allah's name, declaring reliance, and disclaiming personal strength. The reward is named in three responses: guidance, sufficiency, protection. The fourth benefit is named explicitly: Shaytan withdraws.

Try it today

1. Memorize the du'a' in Arabic.
2. Say it every time you leave the home, even for short errands.

3. Pair it with the du'a' on entering ('Bismillāhi walajnā wa-bismillāhi kharajnā wa-'alā Rabbinā tawakkalnā'), Sunan Abi Dawud 5096.

In your day

The du'a' takes about 5 seconds to recite. The cost is negligible. The protection is named directly in the Prophetic word. Build the habit of pausing at the doorway.

A reflection to carry

The duʿāʾ on leaving the home: 'Bismi-llāhi tawakkaltu ʿalā Allāh, wa-lā ḥawla wa-lā quwwata illā bi-llāh.' The Prophet ﷺ: 'Whoever says this on leaving home, it is said: you have been guided, sufficed, and protected; and Shayṭān moves away.' (Tirmidhī 3426.)

Read the longer reflection

The named threefold benefit (guided + sufficed + protected) plus Shayṭān's structural retreat: a 5-second duʿāʾ invokes all four. The Prophet ﷺ established the daily structural protection-mechanism. Cure: memorize the duʿāʾ; recite at every leaving from home (work, errands, masjid, family visits); train children specifically. Modern home-leaving usually defaults to phone-checking; the Prophetic alternative is the 5-second duʿāʾ. The accumulated structural protection across years (multiple leavings daily) is severe.
