The Book of Dress

Riyad as-Salihin · Chapter 124

The Prohibition of Using the Skin of the Leopard

باب النهى عن افتراش جلود النمور والركوب عليها

This chapter turns from what is worn to what is sat and ridden upon. The title speaks of julud an-numur, the skins of leopards, and by extension the hides of predatory wild beasts used as furnishings. Such skins were prized as a display of status and wealth.

Read the two hadith together and the thread is plainness over showy luxury, and a quiet caution against imitating the proud habits of the powerful. The heart-level point is humility in how we furnish our lives; questions about which specific hides and what treatment of them belong to the scholars.

Hadith 810

Mu`awiyah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

عن معاوية رضى الله عنه قال‏:‏ قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏:‏ ‏ "‏لا تركبوا الخز ولا النمار‏" ‏‏.‏ ((رواه أبو داود))

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "Do not ride on saddles made from silk or leopard's skin." [Abu Dawud].

In plain words

He said not to ride on saddles made of silk or leopard skin. A turn away from showy luxury toward plainness.

Hadith 811

Abul-Malih on the authority of his father reported:

وعن أبى المليح عن أبيه ، رضى الله عنه ، أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم نهى عن جلود السباع‏.((رواه أبو داود والترمذي والنسائي)) و في رواية للترمذي: نهى عن جلود السباع أن تفترش. ‏

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prohibited the use of the skins of wild animals. [Abu Dawud, At-Tirmidhi and An- Nasa'i]. Another narration in At-Tirmidhi is: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) forbade the use of the skins of wild animals in making firash (i.e., something to sit on or lie down on, such as cushions, pillows, covers, spreads, saddles, etc.).

In plain words

He forbade using the skins of wild beasts, including as things to sit or lie upon. Simplicity over prized, status-seeking furnishings.
