The Supplication When Wearing a New Outfit or Shoes

Having covered what to wear, the chapter now teaches how to wear it: with remembrance of Allah. The Prophet would name a new garment, a turban or shirt or cloak, and turn to his Lord in a short du'a the moment he put it on.

The supplication holds a whole worldview in a few lines: praise to Allah as the true Giver, a request for the good of the thing and its purpose, and refuge from its evil. Notice that even a fresh set of clothes becomes an occasion for gratitude and reliance, so that no blessing slips by unacknowledged.

Hadith 812

Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) wore a new garment, he would name it. For instance, a turban, shirt, or cloak and would supplicate: "Allahumma lakal-hamdu, Anta kasautanihi, as`aluka khairahu wa khaira ma suni`a lahu, wa a`udhu bika min sharrihi wa sharri ma suni`a lahu (O Allah, all the praise is for You that You have given it to me to put on. I ask You its goodness and the goodness of the purpose for which it was made, and I seek Your Protection from its evil and the evil of the purpose for which it was made).'' [Abu Dawud and At-Tirmidhi].

In plain words

When putting on a new garment, he would name it and pray, praising Allah as its Giver, asking for its good and the good of its purpose, and seeking refuge from any evil in it. Even fresh clothes become an occasion for gratitude and reliance on Allah.
