The Book of the Prohibited actions

Riyad as-Salihin · Chapter 351

Prohibition of Relieving Nature on the Paths

Here the prohibited actions reach into the ordinary corners of daily life, the road people walk and the shade where they rest. The chapter teaches that mindfulness of others is part of faith, and that harming the public spaces a community shares is no small thing.

The striking phrase is that these acts provoke cursing, meaning they draw the resentment and complaint of everyone inconvenienced by them. Buruja reads this as a lesson in social conscience, that a believer guards the comfort and dignity of strangers he will never meet, and avoids becoming a source of harm in the places people depend on.

Hadith 1771

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) said:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "Avoid two habits which provoke cursing." The Companions said: "What are those things which provoke cursing?" He said, "Relieving on the thoroughfares or under the shades where people take shelter and rest." [Muslim].

In plain words

The Prophet warned against two habits that draw people's curses: relieving oneself on the paths they walk or in the shade where they rest. The lesson is care for the shared spaces others depend on.
