Nuzulan min ʿindi Allāh. Hospitality from Allah. The Arabic word nuzul is the King's welcome to his guests. Paradise is named as the divine hospitality.


Qur'an Qur'ān 3:198 (Āl ʿImrān)

لَـٰكِنِ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱتَّقَوْا۟ رَبَّهُمْ لَهُمْ جَنَّـٰتٌ تَجْرِى مِن تَحْتِهَا ٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُ خَـٰلِدِينَ فِيهَا نُزُلًا مِّنْ عِندِ ٱللَّهِ ۗ وَمَا عِندَ ٱللَّهِ خَيْرٌ لِّلْأَبْرَارِ

But those who fear their Lord, for them are gardens beneath which rivers flow, abiding eternally therein, as a hospitality from Allah. And what is with Allah is better for the righteous.

Svenska: Men för dem som fruktar sin Herre finns trädgårdar genom vilka bäckar flöda, där de skall vara för evigt, som gästfrihet från Gud. Och vad som finns hos Gud är bättre för de rättfärdiga.

The story

Sūrat Āl ʿImrān's closing verses (190-200) describe the believers' duʿāʾ and Allah's response. Verse 198 contrasts the disbelievers' temporary worldly enjoyment (named in 197) with the eternal hospitality awaiting the believers. The Qur'an's framing: the disbelievers have brief enjoyment, the believers have eternal hospitality. The trade is not even close.

In the language

Nuzul: hospitality, the first welcome offered to a guest. The word implies the BEGINNING of generosity, with more to follow. Min ʿindi Allāh: from with Allah, the source of generosity. Khayr li-l-abrār: better for the righteous. Abrār are those of consistent righteousness; the verse names them as the recipients.

Why this verse

The word nuzul is precious. It frames Paradise as Allah's GUEST-RECEPTION. The believer is not just admitted; he is welcomed as a guest the King has been preparing for. The hospitality begins immediately upon arrival and never ends.

Bring it into today

Day two. The verse reframes the believer's posture: you are not just entering Paradise; you are arriving at a hospitality prepared for you. Today: live with the awareness that the King is preparing your welcome.

A reflection to carry

Imagine the scene. The believer arrives at the gate. The angels welcome him. Salamun ʿalaykum, peace upon you, you have done well, enter and reside eternally. He walks in. The hospitality is laid out: rivers flowing, gardens spreading, dwellings prepared, fruits hanging within reach. Allah's hospitality is the most elaborate welcome in existence. The believer's job in this life is to deserve the welcome by the taqwā the verse names.

Read the longer reflection

There is a deep teaching in the word nuzul. The Arabic culture honored the guest above the self; the host would give the guest his best food, his best bed, his best company. Allah using the word nuzul about Paradise is naming Himself as the Ultimate Host. The believer arrives as the honored guest. Yet the verse adds: mā ʿinda Allāh khayr (what is with Allah is BETTER). Even the welcoming hospitality is not the deepest gift; what is with Allah Himself is greater. The visit to Allah's presence, the riḍwān (V337), the gaze upon His Face: this is the deepest gift, of which the gardens are the welcoming foyer. Tonight, when you imagine Paradise, do not stop at gardens; ask for the deeper. Yā Allāh, accept us as Your guests in Jannah; welcome us with the hospitality Your verse names; and let us reach what is with You, which is better than the welcome. Āmīn.
