The 365 · Verses · Day 336 · Hope
The trade: belief and effort for forgiveness PLUS Paradise PLUS pleasant dwellings. The deal is in Allah's hand; the price is in the believer's.
Qur'an Qur'ān 61:12 (al-Ṣaff)
“He will forgive you your sins and admit you into gardens beneath which rivers flow and pleasant dwellings in gardens of perpetual residence. That is the great attainment.”
Svenska: Han skall förlåta era synder och föra in er i trädgårdar genom vilka bäckar flöda och behagliga boningar i evighetens trädgårdar. Det är den stora vinsten.
The story
Sūrat al-Ṣaff 10-12 contains the "trade" passage. Allah proposes a tijārah (trade) to the believers: I will save you from a painful punishment IF you believe in Allah and His Messenger and strive in His way; in return, I will forgive your sins, admit you to gardens, and grant pleasant dwellings. The verse 12 lists the gifts Allah will give. The structure: the believer gives effort; Allah gives forgiveness and Paradise.
In the language
Yaghfir lakum dhunūbakum: He will forgive your sins. Wa yudkhilkum jannāt: and admit you into gardens. The two are listed together: forgiveness and admission. Masākin ṭayyibah: pleasant dwellings. ʿAdn: perpetual residence. Each Arabic word adds a dimension of permanence and quality. Dhālika al-fawz al-ʿaẓīm: that is the great attainment. The same phrase as V329 (33:71) defining the greatest success.
Why this verse
Day three of the cluster, and the PIVOT from tawbah to Jannah. The previous two verses (V334-335) named tawbah; this verse names the destination. The natural mercy sequence: tawbah accepted leads to Jannah promised.
Bring it into today
Today: reframe your daily effort as a trade. The salah you offer, the fast you keep, the dhikr you make, the gentleness with family: each is a coin in the trade. Allah's part of the bargain is already named (forgiveness, gardens, dwellings); your part is the daily action.
A reflection to carry
Notice that Allah named the trade EXPLICITLY. He did not require us to figure it out. The verse 61:10 begins: shall I guide you to a trade that will save you from a painful punishment? Allah is asking the believer if he wants to know the trade. The believer answers by accepting the verse's terms: belief, striving in His way. The reward is the verse 12's content. The trade is the most lopsided in human history: small finite effort for infinite reward. The muʾmin who hears this and refuses the trade has rejected the deal of his existence.
Read the longer reflection
Look at the dwellings: masākin ṭayyibah fī jannāt ʿadn. PLEASANT dwellings in PERPETUAL gardens. The Arabic word ṭayyibah carries a fullness: clean, beautiful, perfumed, peaceful. The salaf would imagine these dwellings: the soft beds described in other verses, the doors of pearl, the rivers flowing beneath, the company of the prophets and Companions. The Day's promise is not just Paradise as concept; it is Paradise as concrete dwelling. The believer who builds his actions toward this dwelling is, brick by brick, constructing it. The fawz al-ʿaẓīm is named again here, as it was in V329. The repetition emphasizes: this is the GREAT attainment; everything else is small. Tonight, list three small actions you will take this week to add bricks to your dwelling. Yā Allāh, by the trade You proposed and the dwellings You named, accept our effort. Build for us the masākin ṭayyibah in jannāt ʿadn. Āmīn.
