The 365 · Verses · Day 331 · Repentance
The verse addresses the Prophet's ﷺ OWN WIVES with an invitation to tawbah. Even the household of the most beloved man to Allah was not exempt. The invitation to tawbah is universal.
Qur'an Qur'ān 66:4 (al-Taḥrīm)
“If you both repent to Allah, your hearts have indeed inclined [to acceptance].”
Svenska: Om ni båda ångrar er inför Gud, har era hjärtan sannerligen böjts [mot godkännande].
The story
Sūrat al-Taḥrīm 1-5 describes a household incident: the Prophet ﷺ had been displeased by something his wives had agreed upon. The surah revealed corrects them gently but firmly. Verse 4 is the divine invitation: if you both repent, your hearts are already inclined. The mercy of the invitation is staggering: Allah's pre-acceptance of their tawbah is named in the same verse that calls them to it.
In the language
In tatūbā ilā Allāh: if you both turn back to Allah. The dual form (tatūbā, with the alif of duality) addresses two specific persons. The classical mufassirūn identify them as ʿĀʾishah and Ḥafṣah, the Prophet's ﷺ wives, after a household incident. Fa-qad ṣaghat qulūbukumā: your hearts have inclined. The verse describes the heart-state that ALREADY exists in those who would receive this invitation; Allah names them as already inclined.
Why this verse
Day three of the cluster. The verse demonstrates that tawbah is invited even within the Prophet's ﷺ household. No human relationship, no proximity to the Messenger, no station of marriage to him exempts from the duty of return. The tawbah is for every soul, in every station.
Bring it into today
Today: notice the misconception. Many believers think their proximity to the dīn (being from a religious family, being a scholar, being a memorizer) exempts them from regular tawbah. The verse refuses this. The Prophet's ﷺ wives, the highest station of female proximity to him, were invited to tawbah. The invitation is for you.
A reflection to carry
There is a beautiful detail in the verse. Before the invitation, Allah names: your hearts are already inclined. The grammar implies: I have already made you ready to receive this; now respond. The believer who hears the call to tawbah but feels distant from acceptance should read this clause. The heart's inclination is already a divine gift; the response is the believer's. The verse describes the cooperative motion: Allah inclines first; the servant turns.
Read the longer reflection
Look at the gentleness of the address. The same Allah who could have rebuked harshly chose to phrase the correction as: if you both repent, your hearts are inclined. The grammar is invitation. The pre-acceptance is named. The mercy is the model. Now apply it. The next time you address a wronged person (a spouse, a sibling, a friend), phrase the call to tawbah as Allah did: not 'you must apologize,' but 'if you turn back, your heart is already moving toward it.' The invitational language softens what the demanding language cannot. The Prophet's ﷺ wives heard this verse and immediately corrected; the gentleness of the call produced the swiftness of the response. Yā Allāh, by Your gentleness with the Prophet's ﷺ household, be gentle with our households. Incline our hearts before we knew we needed inclining. Let us hear Your invitations and turn. Āmīn.
