Ḥubb al-Dunyā · The Root of Every Sin
The disease
حُبُّ الدُّنْيَا
Ḥubb al-Dunyā
The story
ʿIsā (Jesus) was asked: 'What is the dunyā?' He said: 'It is like a bridge. Cross it; do not build a house on it.' The believer's relationship with the dunyā is a passage, not a residence.
Why it's named first
The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Love of the dunyā is the root of every sin.' Every disease the believer struggles with (riyāʾ, hasad, kibr, bukhl, etc.) traces back to this single source: the heart's preference for what passes. The Dunyā cluster opens here.
In the Qur'an
بَلْ تُؤْثِرُونَ الحَيَاةَ الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةُ خَيْرٌ وَأَبْقَى (الأعلى 16-17). 'Rather, you prefer the worldly life, while the Hereafter is better and more lasting.' (al-Aʿlā 87:16-17)
In the Sunnah
«حُبُّ الدُّنْيَا رَأْسُ كُلِّ خَطِيئَةٍ». 'Love of the world is the head of every error.' (al-Bayhaqī in Shuʿab al-Īmān)
The cure
Daily measure the love. When you wake, what do you think about first: His pleasure or the day's transactions? When you go to bed, what do you replay: His mercy or what you missed? Realign the priority with deliberate dhikr, deliberate duʿāʾ, deliberate ākhirah thinking.
What is at stake
When dunyā is the heart's first love, akhirah becomes the heart's vague vacation plan. The Day will reveal the inversion.
A du'a for this day
«اللَّهُمَّ لَا تَجْعَلِ الدُّنْيَا أَكْبَرَ هَمِّنَا» (الترمذي 3502). 'O Allah, do not make dunyā our greatest concern.'
The door of mercy
Al-Bāqi (the Enduring). Allah is the only one whose love does not pass; the love of everything else is rented.
A reflection to carry
The dunyā is real, useful, sometimes beautiful. The disease is making it the destination. Allah designed it as a passage.
Read the longer reflection
The Dunyā cluster opens with the disease that fathered all the others. Every Money sin traced back to this; every Family sin; every Tongue sin. The heart's misallocation of love is the root. The Prophet ﷺ named it: 'love of dunyā is the head of every error.' Not 'a head' but THE head. Cut the head and the body's sicknesses subside. The cure is not the rejection of dunyā (the Prophet ﷺ lived in it, fed his family, traded, married, fought). The cure is the proper love: love dunyā as a passage, love Allah as the destination. May He grant us the love-order He designed, with His pleasure at the top and the dunyā in its proper, useful, transit-state place.
A verse, a healing, and a Sunnah, every morning.
