The 365 · Verses · Day 317 · Repentance
After three verses of the most severe condemnation, even of kufr-after-belief, Allah says: EXCEPT for those who turn back. The exception is the believer's escape from any condemnation in the Qur'an.
Qur'an Qur'ān 3:89 (Āl ʿImrān)
إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ تَابُوا۟ مِنۢ بَعْدِ ذَٰلِكَ وَأَصْلَحُوا۟ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ
“Except for those who repent after that and reform; indeed, Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.”
Svenska: Utom dem som ångrar sig därefter och förbättrar sig; sannerligen, Gud är Förlåtande, Barmhärtig.
The story
Sūrat Āl ʿImrān verses 86-88 describe people who disbelieved after believing, naming their punishment as the curse of Allah, the angels, and all of mankind, eternal in the Fire. The condemnation is total. Then verse 89 lands as the exception: except those who repent after that and reform. The verse opens the door even after the most catastrophic spiritual fall.
In the language
Illā alladhīna tābū: except for those who repent. The illā is the Qur'an's most merciful word; it opens the door at the moment the door seems closed. Min baʿdi dhālika: AFTER that. After what? After the kufr-after-belief described in 3:86-88. Even THAT is included in the open door. Wa aṣlaḥū: and reform. Tawbah plus reform is the formula throughout the Qur'an.
Why this verse
The verse's mercy is in its placement. After the strongest condemnation in Sūrat Āl ʿImrān, Allah inserts the door. The exception clause demonstrates a divine principle: no condemnation in the Qur'an is final for the one who turns back. Whatever sin you carry, this verse covers it.
Bring it into today
Day four. The cluster has named the working tawbah (V314), the question (V315), the success-tawbah (V316). Today the verse for those who feel they have crossed lines that cannot be crossed back. The verse names YOU as the exception.
A reflection to carry
There is a pattern across the Qur'an: every verse of warning is followed, at some point, by a verse of exception for those who turn. The Qur'an's structure is the mercy: the door is built into every warning. The verse 3:89 is one of the clearest. Even those who crossed into kufr-after-belief, the verse names them as eligible for the door. So when you feel your sin is too large, find the exception verse for it. There is always one. Allah did not write the Qur'an as a one-way verdict; He wrote it as a door system with exceptions woven into every warning.
Read the longer reflection
Look at the architecture of mercy in this passage. Verses 86-88: kufr-after-belief, curse, eternal Fire. The believer who reads this would be crushed if the surah ended there. Verse 89 opens the door. The same divine voice that listed the curse three verses prior now says: except those who turn. The contrast is intentional. Allah is teaching the believer how to read the Qur'an: never read the warnings without the exceptions. Never read the threats without the doors. The Day will only be the verdict of the warnings for those who refused the exceptions. The Day will be the verdict of the exceptions for those who walked through them. Today, find the warning that scares you most about your specific sin. Then find the exception verse in the same surah or nearby. Allah always paired them. The door is always next to the warning. So tonight, do not weep at the warning alone. Walk to the exception verse. Read it as Allah's direct address to you. Make tawbah. Reform. The verse activates. Yā Allāh, You who write the exception clause into every warning, count us among the excepted. Let us not be of those for whom only the warning was read; let us be of those for whom the door was opened and walked through. Āmīn.
