Qur'an 57:10

وَمَا لَكُمْ أَلَّا تُنفِقُوا۟ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ وَلِلَّهِ مِيرَٰثُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ ۚ لَا يَسْتَوِى مِنكُم مَّنْ أَنفَقَ مِن قَبْلِ ٱلْفَتْحِ وَقَـٰتَلَ ۚ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ أَعْظَمُ دَرَجَةً مِّنَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَنفَقُوا۟ مِنۢ بَعْدُ وَقَـٰتَلُوا۟ ۚ وَكُلًّا وَعَدَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلْحُسْنَىٰ ۚ وَٱللَّهُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ خَبِيرٌ

Why should you not give for God's cause when God alone will inherit what is in the heavens and earth? Those who gave and fought before the triumph are not like others: they are greater in rank than those who gave and fought afterwards. But God has promised a good reward to all of them: God is fully aware of all that you do. (Quran 57:10)

A reflection to carry

Allah's argument is unanswerable. 'Wa mā lakum allā tunfiqū fī sabīli Allāh, wa li-llāhi mīrāthu al-samāwāti wa al-arḍ.' Why would you not spend in Allah's way? To Allah belongs the inheritance of the heavens and the earth. Read that. Allah is reminding us: every dollar you do not give in His path returns to Him anyway, at your death. The only question is whether you released it WILLINGLY (with the niyyah of His pleasure and the multiplier of reward) or UNWILLINGLY (when your body could no longer hold on). The argument cuts to the bone. Then Allah honors a category specifically: 'those who gave and fought BEFORE the triumph' (i.e., before Makkah was conquered and Islam was easy) 'are not equal to those who gave AFTER.' The pre-victory believers earned a greater rank. Why? Because their giving was costlier; their faith less rewarded by visible dunyā outcome. Ya akhī, ya ukhtī, the principle applies to our lives. Giving when it is hard is greater than giving when it is easy. Giving when the cause is unpopular is greater than giving when it is socially praised. Giving early is greater than giving late. Allah weighs the timing and the difficulty, not just the amount.

Yā Rabb, You gave us the argument that should close every hesitation. Why would you not spend in My path? I inherit everything anyway. The dollars in my account today, the assets I am protecting, the wealth I am hoarding, all of it returns to You. The only variable is whether I let it go in obedience or only at death. Forgive me, ya Allāh. Forgive me for the years I have held wealth as if I would keep it. The mortgage I am still paying. The retirement funds I am protecting. The savings I am 'building.' Each is wealth You will inherit. The only question is whether I have built up reward by sending portions of it to Your causes before You take it back. And ya Rabb, the second part of the verse cut me. You ranked the believers who gave BEFORE the victory above those who gave after. Their faith was higher because the result was less guaranteed. Apply this to my life: my giving in seasons of difficulty (mine and the cause's) is weighed higher than my giving in seasons of comfort. The cause that is unpopular and underfunded I should give to first. The brother in difficulty I should support before he becomes a viral fundraiser. The masjid being built in the early stages I should fund before it has the donor wall. And ya Rabb, You closed the verse with 'wAllāhu bimā taʿmalūna khabīr.' Allah is fully aware of what you do. The timing, the difficulty, the niyyah, the secrecy. All known. Let me give early. Let me give costly. Let me give before the heavens and earth's inheritance reclaims my unsent wealth. Āmīn ya Wārith.
