Allah preserved the family-duʿā of the ʿibād al-Raḥmān: grant us coolness of eyes from spouses and offspring; make us imams for the muttaqīn.

Qur'an 25:74

Those who say, 'Our Lord, give us joy in our spouses and offspring. Make us good examples to those who are aware of You.' (Abdel Haleem)

Svenska: Och de som ber: "Herre! Låt våra hustrur och barn skänka oss glädje och gör oss till föredöme för de gudfruktiga!" (Knut Bernström)

The story

Sūrah al-Furqān's closing verses describe the ʿibād al-Raḥmān, the servants of the Most Merciful. The description is comprehensive: they walk humbly (25:63), they pray at night (25:64), they ask Allah to spare them from Hell (25:65), they spend in moderation (25:67), they avoid major sins (25:68-70), they refuse false witness (25:72), and they pray this duʿā for their families (25:74). The duʿā is preserved as part of the ʿibād al-Raḥmān's structural identity.

In the language

Hab lană (هب لنا) is grant us, give us as a gift. Qurrat aʿyun (قرة أعين) is coolness of eyes; the Arabic image is that of eyes finding rest in beholding a beloved sight; the tears of joy that cool the eye in contrast to the tears of grief that burn. Imăm (إمام) is leader, the one who guides others. The duʿā asks for both inner family-joy and outer community-leadership.

Why this verse

Allah preserved the structural family-duʿā for the believers. The duʿā has two parts: the coolness-of-eyes from family (qurrat aʿyun min azwāj wa-dhurriyyāt) and the leadership-position for the muttaqīn (wajʿalnā li-l-muttaqīna imămă). The first asks for family-joy; the second asks for structural leadership of the righteous. The pairing is striking: family-joy is named as a structural blessing the believer specifically asks for, alongside the highest spiritual station.

Bring it into today

Recite this duʿā daily, especially in your duʿā after ṣalăh and in your night-prayer. The first half asks Allah for spouse and offspring who are qurrat aʿyun, sources of joy that cool the eye. The second half asks for structural leadership of the muttaqīn. Both halves are foundational believer-aspirations. The duʿā is preserved by Allah as the ʿibād al-Raḥmān's specific family-prayer; recite it for your own family.

A reflection to carry

Sūrah al-Furqān's closing verses describe the ʿibād al-Raḥmān, the servants of the Most Merciful. One of their preserved duʿās is the family-duʿā of verse 25:74: 'rabbană hab lană min azwăjină wa-dhurriyyătină qurrata aʿyun, wajʿalnă li-l-muttaqīna imămă'. Our Lord, grant us, from our spouses and our offspring, coolness of eyes; and make us imams for the God-fearing. Read the two halves. First: coolness of eyes (qurrat aʿyun) from spouse and offspring. The Arabic image is of eyes finding rest in beholding a beloved sight; tears of joy cool the eye in contrast to tears of grief that burn. The believer asks Allah for a family that is structurally a source of joy, not of pain. Second: leadership of the muttaqīn. The believer asks for structural community-leadership position among the God-fearing. The pairing is striking: family-joy is named alongside the highest spiritual station. The ʿibād al-Raḥmān ask for both. Today, recite this duʿā in your daily adhkār. The duʿā is preserved by Allah as the believer's specific family-prayer; recite it for your own family with full presence.

Read the longer reflection

Sūrah al-Furqān's closing verses (25:63-77) describe the ʿibād al-Raḥmān, the servants of the Most Merciful. The passage is one of the most concentrated profiles of the ideal believer in the Qurʾan. Allah lists their characteristics: they walk on earth gently (25:63), they spend the night in prayer (25:64), they fear Hell (25:65), they spend moderately (25:67), they avoid shirk, murder, and zină (25:68), they refuse false witness (25:72), they remember Allah's verses with attention rather than blind acceptance (25:73), they pray for their families (25:74), and they take refuge with Allah from arrogance (25:74's tail). The list closes with Allah's reward: 'They will be granted the highest level of Paradise as a reward for their patience, and they will receive there welcome and salutations of peace' (25:75). Among the ʿibād al-Raḥmān's preserved duʿās, verse 25:74 stands out for its family-focus. Read each clause carefully. 'rabbană hab lană min azwăjină wa-dhurriyyătină qurrata aʿyun'. Our Lord, grant us, from our spouses and our offspring, coolness of eyes. The Arabic verb hab lană is the imperative-of-gift; the believer is asking Allah to grant as a gift the named blessing. The blessing: qurrat aʿyun, coolness of eyes. The Arabic image is rich. The eye, in Arabic literary tradition, is the seat of the heart's emotional response; tears of grief burn (hār); tears of joy cool (qarr); the qurrat al-ʿayn is the joy that cools the eye, the sight that brings rest, the beloved-presence that lifts the heart. The believer asks Allah for spouse and offspring who are this category of blessing: structurally joy-producing, structurally heart-cooling, structurally peace-bringing. The classical commentators discussed what makes spouse and offspring qurrat aʿyun. Ibn Kathīr: 'when the believer sees his spouse and children in obedience to Allah, his eyes are cooled by them'. The qurrat aʿyun is not just the natural joy of family but the specific joy of family in righteousness. The believer who sees his wife praying, his children memorizing Qurʾan, his family aligned with Allah's pleasure: this is the structural qurrat al-ʿayn the duʿā asks for. The second half: 'wajʿalnă li-l-muttaqīna imămă'. And make us imams for the God-fearing. The Arabic imăm is leader, the one who is followed. The believer asks Allah to make him not just a follower of the muttaqīn but a leader of them. The ambition is structurally high: not just to be among the righteous, but to lead them. The classical scholars noted that this is the only duʿā in the Qurʾan where the believer asks for community-leadership of the righteous; it is preserved specifically because the ambition itself is part of the ʿibād al-Raḥmān's profile. The two halves of the duʿā are paired structurally. The believer asks for family-joy and community-leadership in one breath. The pairing tells us: the ʿibād al-Raḥmān are not satisfied with one without the other. The family is the inner circle; the leadership-of-righteous is the outer circle; both are part of the believer's structural ambition. Now consider the modern application. Many Muslims, when praying for their families, ask vague duʿās: 'O Allah, bless my family'. The verse 25:74 provides the precise template. Recite the duʿā verbatim in Arabic; understand its two halves; pray it with the awareness of what you are asking. 'O our Lord, grant us, from our spouses and our offspring, coolness of eyes; and make us imams for the God-fearing'. The duʿā is comprehensive: family-joy + community-leadership. The cure has three motions. First, memorize verse 25:74 in Arabic. The duʿā is one of the most beautiful family-duʿās in the Qurʾan; it should be in every believer's repertoire. Second, recite it daily, especially after ṣalăh, in the night-prayer, and in private moments of duʿā. Third, work in the direction the duʿā asks for. The duʿā is not magic-incantation; it is structural request that the believer also moves toward. Train the family in righteousness so they become qurrat aʿyun; work in the community so you can serve as imăm for the muttaqīn. Pray today: Rabbană hab lană min azwăjină wa-dhurriyyătină qurrata aʿyun, wajʿalnă li-l-muttaqīna imămă. Our Lord, grant us, from our spouses and our offspring, coolness of eyes, and make us imams for the God-fearing. The duʿā is preserved by Allah as the ʿibād al-Raḥmān's family-prayer; live it.
