The 365 · Verses · Day 158 · Patience

Humanity is in loss except for four: faith, deeds, truth-exhortation, patience-exhortation.

Qur'an Quran 103:1-3

وَٱلْعَصْرِ

By the declining day, man is [deep] in loss, except for those who believe, do good deeds, urge one another to the truth, and urge one another to steadfastness. (Abdel Haleem)

Svenska: VID DEN flyende tiden! Människan förbereder helt visst sin egen undergång, utom de som tror och lever ett rättskaffens liv och råder varandra [att hålla fast vid] sanningen och råder varandra [att bära motgång med] tålamod. (Knut Bernström)

The story

Ibn Kathīr: the Companions, when they would meet, would not separate without reciting this surah to one another, then giving salām. The structural pattern: the surah is the operational reminder that anchors believers in their identity at every meeting.

In the language

Khusr (loss) is the financial-metaphor for spiritual bankruptcy: the soul is in deficit, accumulating debt without compensating credit. The exception (illā) names four characteristics; the closing two are paired (tawāṣī: mutual exhortation), making the believer's life structurally communal: faith and good deeds alone are insufficient; without the social dimension of mutual exhortation to truth and patience, the believer is incomplete.

Why this verse

Sūrat al-ʿAṣr is the structural Quranic charter of the believing life. Imam ash-Shāfiʿī said: 'If Allah had only revealed this surah, it would have been sufficient.' The surah names: humanity is in loss EXCEPT those with four integrated characteristics: (1) īmān (faith); (2) ʿamal ṣāliḥ (righteous deeds); (3) tawāṣī bi-l-ḥaqq (mutual exhortation to truth); (4) tawāṣī bi-ṣ-ṣabr (mutual exhortation to patience). The four together define the saved believer.

Bring it into today

Recite the surah daily. Use the four-fold structure as a self-audit: (a) Is my faith maintained? (b) Are my deeds good? (c) Am I exhorting others to truth? (d) Am I exhorting them to patience? The fourth two are often neglected by believers who focus on the first two; the surah names all four as required.

A reflection to carry

Sūrat al-ʿAṣr names the four-fold integrated characteristics that save the believer from the structural khusr (loss) of human existence: faith, good deeds, mutual exhortation to truth, mutual exhortation to patience. Imam ash-Shāfiʿī: this surah alone would have sufficed.

Read the longer reflection

The classical scholars wrote at length on this surah as the structural Quranic statement of the saved-believer's complete profile. The four characteristics are integrated: each requires the others. Faith without good deeds is empty assertion. Good deeds without faith are unanchored. Faith and deeds without truth-exhortation are individualistic. All three without patience-exhortation are fragile under difficulty. The complete profile (all four) is the believing-community's structural shape. Modern Muslim communities can audit themselves against this profile: where are we strong? where weak? The surah is the diagnostic.
