Every moving creature on earth has its provision named upon Allah. The same guarantee covers you.


Qur'an Q 11:6

۞ وَمَا مِن دَآبَّةٍ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ إِلَّا عَلَى ٱللَّهِ رِزْقُهَا وَيَعْلَمُ مُسْتَقَرَّهَا وَمُسْتَوْدَعَهَا ۚ كُلٌّ فِى كِتَـٰبٍ مُّبِينٍ

There is not a creature that moves on earth whose provision is not His concern. He knows where it lives and its [final] resting place: it is all [there] in a clear record. (Abdel Haleem)

The story

Ibn ʿAbbās glossed: mustaqarrahā is where it resides; mustawdaʿahā is where it will die. Ibn Kathir cross-references Q 6:38 and Q 6:59 on Allah's encompassing knowledge: 'Not a leaf falls but He knows it. There is not a grain in the darkness of the earth nor anything fresh or dry, but is written in a Clear Record.' The verse names every creature, including the believer, within this universal provision-system. The implication: the believer who worries about provision is structurally worrying about a divinely-named guarantee.

In the language

دَابَّةٍ (dābbah) is from d-b-b, the root of moving things. The Quran is comprehensive: every moving creature, from the smallest insect to the largest whale, is included. عَلَى اللَّهِ (ʿalā Allah, 'upon Allah') is the construction of incumbency. Allah names provision as a divine commitment, not a hopeful possibility. مُسْتَقَرَّهَا (mustaqarrahā) and مُسْتَوْدَعَهَا (mustawdaʿahā) are paired: home and deposit, life and death. كِتَابٍ مُّبِينٍ (kitāb mubīn, 'a clear record/book') is the divine pre-recorded ledger.

Why this verse

Q 11:6 is the Quran's structural declaration of universal provision. Every creature that moves on earth, no matter how small or how distant, has its provision (rizq) named as ʿalā Allah (upon Allah, as a divine responsibility). Allah knows each creature's mustaqarr (place of dwelling) and mustawdaʿ (place of deposit). The verse names every creature, including the believer, within this universal provision-system.

Bring it into today

Audit one week of provision-anxiety. How many hours did you spend worrying about money, security, retirement, savings? Compare to the hours spent in lawful work. The work-hours are the asbāb the verse honors; the worry-hours are the asbāb the verse rebukes. Reduce the second category. Increase tawakkul.

A reflection to carry

The verse is the believer's structural cure for provision-anxiety. The doubt 'will I have enough?' is structurally undone by the verse's universal scope: every creature, from the ant beneath your feet to the whale in the deep, is provided for. The same Allah who provides for them, who knows where each one lives and where each one will die, has named you specifically among His creatures. The provision-question is therefore not 'will Allah provide?' but 'will I exert the lawful means and trust the named guarantee?'

There is a piercing dimension to the verse's pairing of mustaqarr and mustawdaʿ. Both are known to Allah. Your home is known; your grave is known. The verse is severe in its cosmic perspective: the provision-anxiety that consumes years of the believer's life is anxiety about a transit-period whose endpoint Allah has already named. The believer who lives the verse holds two truths together: (1) work hard for the rizq through lawful means (the verse does not invite passivity); (2) the worry-loop above and beyond the work is structurally contradicting the verse's named guarantee. The classical scholars wrote that this verse is one of the most operative in dissolving the ḥubb ad-dunyā / fear-of-poverty pairing.
