The 365 · Tazkiyah · Day 338 · Heart
al-Wahn · Love of Dunyā, Fear of Death
The disease
al-Wahn
The story
The Companions, when they heard this hadith, redoubled their efforts to live light. ʿUmar slept on a mat that imprinted his side. Abū Bakr distributed his wealth before his death. Wahn was the disease they refused to host.
Why it's named first
The Prophet ﷺ prophesied that nations would gather against the Ummah like diners around a feast, not because of the Ummah's small numbers, but because of WAHN. The Companions asked: what is wahn? He said: love of dunyā and dislike of death. The disease is the soul's weakness when both pulls are present together.
In the Qur'an
67). 'You desire the perishable goods of this world, but Allah desires the Hereafter [for you].' (al-Anfāl 8:67)
In the Sunnah
(Abu Dawud 4297)
The cure
Two parallel medicines. Reduce love of dunyā (moderate consumption, generous giving, daily zuhd practices). Reduce fear of death (frequent visits to graves, repeated reading of death-verses, preparation of one's will). Both shrink wahn simultaneously.
What is at stake
The Ummah's spiritual weakness was diagnosed by the Prophet ﷺ as wahn. When the disease grips, defeat follows even with overwhelming numbers. The cure is individual; the result is communal.
A du'a for this day
The door of mercy
Al-Qawī (the Strong). His strength replaces our wahn when we ask.
A reflection to carry
Wahn is the Ummah's most-quoted disease and least-treated one. Treat it personally.
Read the longer reflection
The Prophet's ﷺ prophecy in this hadith is the most cited and least applied. We treat it as historical commentary; he meant it as personal diagnosis. The cure is personal. Lighten your attachment to dunyā (declutter, give, simplify). Befriend death's reality (visit graves monthly, read death-verses weekly, write your will). The cumulative effect is the dispersal of wahn. May Allah remove wahn from our hearts and replace it with the strength He named al-Qawī.
