Nisyān al-Ākhirah · Forgetting the Hereafter

The disease

نِسْيَانُ الْآخِرَةِ

Nisyān al-Ākhirah

The story

Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq used to say: 'I wish I were a tree that was cut and eaten.' His akhirah was so present that he envied creation that has no accountability. We have lost this register.

Why it's named first

The Qur'an names the forgetters of the Hereafter as a category. They live as if there is no return. The disease is not denial; it is forgetting. Days pile up where the next world simply does not visit the heart. The cure is deliberate, daily, repeated remembrance.

In the Qur'an

وَلَا تَكُونُوا كَالَّذِينَ نَسُوا اللَّهَ فَأَنسَاهُمْ أَنفُسَهُمْ (الحشر 19). 'Do not be like those who forgot Allah, so He made them forget themselves.' (al-Ḥashr 59:19) Allah's symmetry is exact: forget the akhirah, forget who you are.

In the Sunnah

«أَكْثِرُوا ذِكْرَ هَادِمِ اللَّذَّاتِ الْمَوْتَ، فَإِنَّهُ لَمْ يَذْكُرْهُ أَحَدٌ فِي ضَيِّقٍ إِلَّا وَسَّعَهُ، وَلَا فِي سَعَةٍ إِلَّا ضَيَّقَهُ». 'Remember often the destroyer of pleasures, death; no one remembers it in hardship except it eases for him, nor in ease except it contracts him.' (Ibn Ḥibbān 2992)

The cure

Pair every life decision with a heaven-hell test: would this please me if I were in the grave looking back? The pair makes invisible the dunyā considerations and visible the akhirah ones.

What is at stake

Forgetting the akhirah makes every dunyā decision sloppy. We accept what we would never accept if we remembered. We refuse what we would joyfully give if we remembered.

A du'a for this day

«اللَّهُمَّ لَا تُنْسِنِي أمر الْآخِرَةِ فِي بُسْرِ الدُّنْيَا». 'O Allah, do not let me forget the matter of the Hereafter in the smallness of the dunyā.'

The door of mercy

Al-Bāqi (the Enduring), al-Muʿīd (the Returner). His remembrance is our cure for our forgetting.

A reflection to carry

The Qur'an warns of the punishment that fits the disease: forget Allah and the akhirah, He makes you forget who you are. The cure is the inverse: remember, and become.

Read the longer reflection

Nisyān al-ākhirah is the modern muslim's pandemic disease. We do not deny the next world; we forget it. Days pass without Paradise crossing our mind. Weeks pass without contemplation of the grave. The phone is always remembered; the akhirah is sometimes remembered, often not. The Sunnah's prescription is repetitive remembrance: visit graves, study death, recite the akhirah-verses. The cure is structural: build the remembrance into the day so it is not optional. May Allah, in His mercy, place the akhirah in our hearts as a permanent guest, and may we never live a day He does not.

A verse, a healing, and a Sunnah, every morning.
