Iftinān bi al-Dunyā · Captivation by the World

The disease

الافتِنَانُ بِالدُّنْيَا

al-Iftinān bi al-Dunyā

The story

When the campaign of Tabūk was called, those who hesitated were those captivated by the orchard's ripening dates and the cool of their homes. Allah named them: 'they preferred to be with the stay-behinds' (Q 9:81). The captivation was specific: dates and shade. We have our equivalents.

Why it's named first

Fitnah in Arabic carries the meaning of 'trial that captivates.' The dunyā is a fitnah; the Prophet ﷺ warned specifically: 'dunyā is sweet and green; Allah has appointed you over it to see what you will do, so beware of dunyā and beware of women, for the first fitnah of B. Israel was in women' (Muslim 2742). The disease is finding the heart's home in what is meant to be only a station.

In the Qur'an

إِنَّمَا أَمْوَالُكُمْ وَأَوْلَادُكُمْ فِتْنَةٌ ۔ وَاللَّهُ عِندَهُ أَجْرٌ عَظِيمٌ (التغابن 15). 'Your wealth and children are only a trial, and Allah, with Him is a great reward.' (al-Taghābun 64:15)

In the Sunnah

«تَعِسَ عَبْدُ الدِّينَارِ وَعَبْدُ الدِّرْهَمِ وَعَبْدُ الْخَمِيصَةِ وَعَبْدُ الْخَمِيلَةِ». 'Wretched is the slave of dinar, the slave of dirham, the slave of fine fabric, the slave of luxury.' (Bukhari 2887)

The cure

Identify the specific dunyā element that captivates YOUR heart most. For some it is wealth; for others success, status, fashion, food, romance. Name it. Then deliberately moderate it. Eat less of it; spend less time on it; depend on it less for your mood. The heart loosens its grip when the input decreases.

What is at stake

The heart captivated by dunyā is unable to remember Allah purely. Every prayer is shadowed by the captivation. The Day will reveal what the heart actually loved.

A du'a for this day

«اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلِ الدُّنْيَا فِي يَدَيْ وَلَا تَجْعَلْهَا فِي قَلْبِي». 'O Allah, place the world in my hands and not in my heart.'

The door of mercy

Al-Mughnī (the Enricher). Allah enriches the heart that turns to Him; the dunyā cannot.

A reflection to carry

Captivation is identifiable. Name it. Moderate it. Watch the heart loosen as the input decreases.

Read the longer reflection

The Prophet ﷺ was specific about the captivations of his time: dinar, dirham, fine fabric, luxury foods. Each is a wretchedness when it becomes the heart's master. The modern equivalents are different in form, identical in function: phones, brands, careers, statuses, relationships. The believer is not asked to abandon dunyā; he is asked to refuse captivation. Hands full, heart empty (of attachment). May Allah make dunyā our servant and not our seducer.
