Wujūd Allāhi Ghafūran Raḥīman · Finding Him at the Turn
The disease
عَدَمُ الْإِيمَانِ بِوُسْعَةِ الْمَغْفِرَةِ
ʿAdam al-Īmān bi-Wusʿat al-Maghfirah
The story
It is reported that Ibn ʿAbbās said: 'If a person committed seventy major sins between dawn and noon, but at noon said sincerely 'astaghfirullāh', Allah would forgive him.' The grandfather of tafsīr knew the verse better than we do.
Why it's named first
After 10 days of tawbah pathways from Money sins, the deepest disease remains: the believer who tries to turn but inwardly doubts that Allah will receive him. The verse in al-Nisāʾ names the actual experience: 'Whoever does evil and wrongs himself but then seeks Allah's forgiveness will find Allah Forgiving, Merciful.' The verb is yajid, he WILL FIND. Allah promises the finding. The disease is not believing the promise.
In the Qur'an
وَمَن يَعْمَلْ سُوءًا أَوْ يَظْلِمْ نَفْسَهُ ثُمَّ يَسْتَغْفِرِ اللَّهَ يَجِدِ اللَّهَ غَفُورًا رَّحِيمًا (النساء 110). 'Whoever does evil or wrongs himself and then seeks Allah's forgiveness will find Allah Forgiving, Merciful.' (al-Nisāʾ 4:110)
In the Sunnah
«يَقُولُ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى: يَا ابْنَ آدَمَ، إِنَّكَ مَا دَعَوْتَنِي وَرَجَوْتَنِي غَفَرْتُ لَكَ عَلَى مَا كَانَ فِيكَ وَلَا أُبَالِي... يَا ابْنَ آدَمَ، لَوْ أَتَيْتَنِي بِقُرَابِ الْأَرْضِ خَطَايَا ثُمَّ لَقِيتَنِي لَا تُشْرِكُ بِي شَيْئًا لَأَتَيْتُكَ بِقُرَابِهَا مَغْفِرَةً». 'Allah says: O son of Adam, as long as you call upon Me and place hope in Me, I will forgive you for what you have done... O son of Adam, were you to come to Me with an earth-load of sins but met Me without associating anything with Me, I would meet you with an earth-load of forgiveness.' (Tirmidhi 3540)
The cure
Make this verse your daily duʿāʾ. Repeat it. Let your tongue hear: yajid Allāha ghafūran raḥīmā (he will find Allah Forgiving, Merciful). The disease is in the heart's secret doubt; the cure is in the tongue's repeated affirmation.
What is at stake
The believer who does not believe in Allah's forgiveness will not pursue tawbah; will not even open the door. The disease is the locking from inside.
A du'a for this day
Memorize 4:110 and recite it daily until your heart believes it.
The door of mercy
Al-Ghafūr, al-Raḥīm. The verse seals these two Names; they are the believer's destination at the turn.
A reflection to carry
The verb is yajid, not yuḥāwal (try to find). He will FIND. Allah commits to the verb. Your part is the seeking.
Read the longer reflection
After ten days of tawbah pathways, this is the deepest medicine: the simple believing that yajid Allāha ghafūran raḥīmā is true. Allah has placed His Name as the answer to your turning. The believer who keeps doubting that he will find Allah Forgiving has the deepest of all Money diseases: the heart's secret refusal of mercy. Cure it with the verse itself. Memorize 4:110. Make it your daily companion. Let your tongue say it before your sin and after. May Allah make us of those who, when they sought Him, found Him Forgiving and Merciful, and may none of us miss the finding because of our own doubt.
