Al-Ikhlāṣ (the cure / structural antidote)

HeartHeart Disease

The story

Sufyān ath-Thawrī: 'I have not struggled against anything more difficult than the niyyah.' Al-Junayd: 'Ikhlāṣ is a secret between Allah and the believer that even the angels do not know to record.' Imam Aḥmad: 'Whoever wishes to attain ikhlāṣ must first wish to be unknown.'

Why it's named first

Ikhlāṣ is the structural antidote to riyāʾ, sumʿah, ḥubb al-madḥ, and ʿujb. The Prophet ﷺ: 'Innamā al-aʿmālu bi-n-niyyāt' (Indeed, deeds are by intentions, Bukhārī 1, Muslim 1907, narrated by ʿUmar). Every act is judged by its niyyah; the niyyah of ikhlāṣ (sincerity for Allah alone) is the foundation. The riyāʾ-family of diseases all attack the niyyah; ikhlāṣ is the cure that preserves it.

In the Qur'an

Q 98:5: 'They were not commanded except to worship Allah, sincerely devoting their religion to Him (mukhliṣīna lahu ad-dīn).' Q 39:11: 'Say: I have been commanded to worship Allah, sincerely devoting religion to Him.'

In the Sunnah

Bukhārī 1, Muslim 1907. The hadith of the three first-judged on the Day (the scholar, the wealthy man, the warrior): each is asked about his niyyah; each is condemned for having performed the act for reputation.

The cure

1. Before every act of worship, pause for 5 seconds and explicitly affirm: 'Lillāhi taʿālā' (for Allah, exalted is He). 2. After every act, make istighfār. 3. Build a substantial body of secret-deeds. 4. Read about ikhlāṣ regularly. 5. Daily duʿāʾ explicitly for ikhlāṣ.

What is at stake

Without ikhlāṣ, every act of worship is structurally vulnerable. Years of deeds may accumulate without the structural foundation; on the Day, the foundation-test reveals what was actually built.

A du'a for this day

'Allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bika an ushrika bika wa-anā aʿlam, wa-astaghfiruka li-mā lā aʿlam.' (Aḥmad 19606, ṣaḥīḥ, Abū Mūsā al-Ashʿarī.) Sayyid al-Istighfār (Bukhārī 6306) and Q 98:5.

The door of mercy

Ikhlāṣ is cultivable. Within years of conscious practice, the believer's default-niyyah shifts toward Allah. Acts that previously required conscious niyyah-correction begin to default to ikhlāṣ.

A reflection to carry

Ikhlāṣ is the structural antidote to riyāʾ, sumʿah, ḥubb al-madḥ, and ʿujb. The Prophet ﷺ: 'Innamā al-aʿmālu bi-n-niyyāt.' Every act is judged by its niyyah; the niyyah of ikhlāṣ is the foundation.

Read the longer reflection

Sufyān ath-Thawrī: 'I have not struggled against anything more difficult than the niyyah.' Al-Junayd: 'Ikhlāṣ is a secret between Allah and the believer that even the angels do not know to record.' Imam Aḥmad: 'Whoever wishes to attain ikhlāṣ must first wish to be unknown.' The cure: 5 seconds of niyyah-affirmation before every worship-act ('lillāhi taʿālā'); after every act, make istighfār; build a substantial body of secret-deeds; daily duʿāʾ against shirk-known-and-unknown. Within years (not weeks) of conscious practice, the default-niyyah shifts toward Allah.
