Fasting Mondays and Thursdays
The hadith
«تُعْرَضُ الأَعْمَالُ يَوْمَ الإِثْنَيْنِ وَالخَمِيسِ، فَأُحِبُّ أَنْ يُعْرَضَ عَمَلِي وَأَنَا صَائِمٌ».
The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Deeds are presented (to Allah) on Mondays and Thursdays, and I love that my deeds be presented while I am fasting.' (Tirmidhi 747)
Svenska: Profeten ﷺ sade: 'Handlingar presenteras (för Allah) på måndagar och torsdagar, och jag älskar att mina handlingar presenteras medan jag fastar.' (Tirmidhi 747)
Tirmidhi 747; Muslim 1162
The story
ʿĀ'ishah said the Prophet ﷺ would not let either Monday or Thursday pass without fasting if he was healthy. The consistency was the model.
Why it's here
Mondays and Thursdays are the weekly presentation days of deeds. The Prophet ﷺ loved to have his deeds presented while fasting. The believer follows; the fast adds a layer of cleanliness to the week's record.
Try it today
Fast every Monday and Thursday. Begin with one day; build to both. If you cannot do both, start with Monday (the day the Prophet ﷺ was born). The Sunnah is gentle; build gradually.
In your day
Mondays and Thursdays often pair with the work week; the fast disciplines the work itself. Many believers find their best productivity on these days.
A reflection to carry
Two days a week, fast. Two days a week, the deeds are presented. Make the timing match.
Read the longer reflection
Mondays and Thursdays form the believer's weekly fasting rhythm. The Prophet ﷺ observed it; the Companions preserved it; the Ummah's pious have maintained it. The day of presentation should find the believer fasting if possible. May our deeds, when presented on these days, find us in the state the Prophet ﷺ loved.
