Performing Wuḍūʾ Before Going to Sleep

The hadith

The Prophet ﷺ said: When you go to your bed, make wuḍūʾ like the wuḍūʾ for salah, then lie down on your right side. (Bukhārī, Muslim)

Svenska: Profeten ﷺ sa: När du går till sängs, utför wuḍūʾ som för bönen, och lägg dig sedan på din högra sida. (Bukhari, Muslim)

Sahih Bukhārī 247, Sahih Muslim 2710, on the authority of al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib. The Prophet ﷺ taught the full pre-sleep practice: wuḍūʾ, right side, the duʿāʾ, then the muraqaba.

The story

The Prophet ﷺ added a beautiful detail: an angel spends the night with the believer who sleeps in wuḍūʾ; every time the believer turns in his sleep, the angel says: O Allah, forgive Your servant, for he sleeps in purity (Ṭabarānī, ḥasan). The believer's turning becomes duʿāʾ on his behalf, without his knowledge. The Sunnah is asleep-action.

Why it's here

Sleep is a small death (V291). The Prophet ﷺ commanded preparing for it with wuḍūʾ. If the believer dies in his sleep (which is the leading cause of natural death historically), he dies in a state of ṭahārah. The angels record the soul handed over clean. The believer who sleeps without wuḍūʾ risks being taken in an unprepared state.

Try it today

1) Make wuḍūʾ as the last thing before lying down. 2) Lie on the right side (Sunnah). 3) Recite the pre-sleep duʿāʾ: bismika rabbī waḍaʿtu janbī... 4) The three Quls breath-and-wipe (S251).

In your day

Make wuḍūʾ before sleeping every night, even if you have made wuḍūʾ for ʿishāʾ earlier. Many believers think their evening wuḍūʾ persists; the Sunnah is a SEPARATE pre-sleep wuḍūʾ as the soul's preparation.

A reflection to carry

There is a precise hadith that anchors this practice. The Prophet ﷺ said: whoever sleeps in a state of wuḍūʾ, an angel spends the night within his garment, and every time the believer moves, the angel says: O Allah, forgive Your servant (Ṭabarānī, ḥasan). The believer's sleep is being prayed over by an angel. The cost is one minute of wuḍūʾ. Most modern believers skip this and miss the angelic duʿāʾ.

Read the longer reflection

There is a deeper teaching here. Sleep is the closest experience to death the believer has. The Prophet ﷺ modeled sleep as a small spiritual practice, not just rest. Wuḍūʾ prepares the body; the pre-sleep duʿāʾ prepares the soul; the right side preserves the proper position; the three Quls protect through the night; the angel logs the believer's clean handover. The whole architecture is the Sunnah of dying-and-being-resurrected nightly. The believer who lives this is rehearsing his actual death. Tonight, do not collapse into bed. Walk to the wuḍūʾ station. Wash the limbs. Lie down on the right. Speak the duʿāʾ. The angel takes its place beside you. The night becomes a small worship. Yā Allāh, accept our pre-sleep wuḍūʾ. Let the angel pray for us through the night. If You take our soul, take it in the cleanliness we prepared. Āmīn.
