The Sunan of Fiṭrah :: Trimming the Mustache, Beard, Nails, and Body Hair

The hadith

The Prophet ﷺ said: The fiṭrah is five: circumcision, shaving the pubic hair, trimming the mustache, clipping the nails, and plucking the armpit hair. (Bukhārī, Muslim)

Svenska: Profeten ﷺ sa: Fiṭrah är fem: omskärelse, rakning av skämhår, klippning av mustaschen, klippning av naglarna, och plockning av armhålevset. (Bukhari, Muslim)

Sahih Bukhārī 5891, Sahih Muslim 257, on the authority of Abū Hurayrah. Anas radiya Allāhu ʿanhu narrates the time limit: we were given a time period not to leave the mustache, nails, armpit hair, or pubic hair more than forty nights (Muslim).

The story

Anas ibn Mālik said: the Prophet ﷺ fixed a maximum: do not leave these things more than forty days. The Sunnah is not just to do them once; it is to MAINTAIN them within the time window. The Companions tracked their forty-day cycles. We have lost the tracking.

Why it's here

The fiṭrah is the natural state Allah created humans in. The five acts are the maintenance of that natural state. The Prophet ﷺ named them as fiṭrah, meaning they are not arbitrary acts of piety but the human's natural condition that must be kept. Neglecting them is letting the body slip from its natural condition.

Try it today

1) Set a 40-day recurring calendar reminder for the fiṭrah maintenance. 2) Trim nails weekly. 3) Trim the mustache short (not the beard for men; the beard is to be kept full per the Sunnah). 4) Maintain the rest within the forty-day window.

In your day

Set a 40-day calendar reminder. Every forty days at most, trim what needs trimming: nails (more often), mustache, body hair where the Sunnah specifies. The maintenance is a continuous worship.

A reflection to carry

There is a precise hadith on the beard. The Prophet ﷺ said: trim the mustaches and let the beards grow long; differ from the polytheists (Bukhārī, Muslim). The pairing is intentional: mustache SHORT, beard LONG. The Sunnah of the believer's appearance is distinct from the cultural norms that shift. The modern Muslim man often inverts: mustache long, beard short or absent. The Sunnah's clear direction is the inverse. The believer who restores the Sunnah carries on his face the distinguishing mark the Prophet ﷺ named.

Read the longer reflection

There is a deeper teaching in calling these acts fiṭrah, natural state. The fiṭrah is the original disposition Allah created humans with: īmān, tawḥīd, the love of the truth. The body's natural state is the OUTWARD parallel of the soul's fiṭrah. Allowing the body to slip from its natural state (uncut nails, untrimmed mustache, neglected hygiene) is a small symbolic neglect of fiṭrah. The believer's body matches his soul's commitment. The salaf understood this. They were meticulous about appearance not for vanity but for fiṭrah-maintenance. Modern neglect treats these as cosmetic; the Sunnah treats them as theological. Tonight, set the reminder. Forty days. The body matches the soul. The cluster's broader Cleanliness theme rests on this principle: outer cleanliness reflects inner cleanliness. Yā Allāh, keep us on the fiṭrah You created us with, in body and in soul. Do not let our outer slip while our inner pretends to stay aligned. Āmīn.
