Reciting Sūrat al-Mulk Every Night Before Sleep

The hadith

The Prophet ﷺ said: A surah of thirty verses in the Qur'an interceded for a man until he was forgiven, and it is Sūrat Tabārak (al-Mulk). (Abū Dāwūd, Tirmidhī)

Svenska: Profeten ﷺ sa: En sura med trettio verser i Koranen förebedde för en man tills han fick förlåtelse, och det är Sūrat Tabārak (al-Mulk). (Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi)

Sunan Abū Dāwūd 1400, Sunan Tirmidhī 2891, ṣaḥīḥ. The Prophet ﷺ also said it is al-Māniʿah, the preventer, which prevents the punishment of the grave (Nasāʾī).

The story

Ibn ʿAbbās radiya Allāhu ʿanhumā explained that the Prophet ﷺ would not sleep without reciting Sūrat al-Mulk (Tirmidhī, ṣaḥīḥ). He treated it as the protective seal of his night. Jābir radiya Allāhu ʿanhu said: the Prophet ﷺ would not sleep until he had recited Alif Lām Mīm Tanzīl al-Sajdah and Tabāraka alladhī biyadihi al-mulk (Tirmidhī, Aḥmad).

Why it's here

A surah that argues for you in the grave. The Prophet ﷺ named it al-Māniʿah, the Preventer. When the punishment angels come, this surah rises from your night recitations and shields you. The cost is five minutes a night. The return is shelter where you will lie helpless and silent.

Try it today

1) Open Sūrat al-Mulk in your muṣḥaf tonight and recite it before sleep. 2) If you cannot read fluently, listen on audio while you settle into bed. 3) Memorize one page at a time; after a month or two, you will know it by heart.

In your day

Recite it every night before sleep. The whole surah takes 5-7 minutes. If you are too tired, listen to it instead. The Sunnah is to recite, but the salaf permitted listening when fatigue made recitation impossible.

A reflection to carry

There is a station every soul will face that no one talks about enough: the qabr. Between this life and the resurrection, the grave is its own world with its own questions and its own punishments. The Prophet ﷺ named the surah that PROTECTS in that station. He named it al-Māniʿah, the preventer of grave punishment. Imagine the mercy of Allah: He gave us five minutes of nightly recitation as the price of shelter in a place where we will be silent and alone. We say no. We watch one more episode. We scroll one more feed. The deal is open every night.

Read the longer reflection

There is a hadith that adds gravity to this practice. The Prophet ﷺ said about the qabr: the grave is the first stage of the Hereafter. If a person is saved from it, what comes after is easier. If he is not saved from it, what comes after is harder (Tirmidhī, ḥasan). The qabr is the FIRST examination. The five-minute investment of Sūrat al-Mulk is the buy-in for the first test. Now think about how you spent your last hour before sleep. Compare it to those five minutes. Most of us spend the hour on content that will testify against us and refuse the five minutes for the surah that testifies for us. This is the inversion the Qur'an warns about. Tonight, before you put down your head, open the muṣḥaf to page 562. Recite the thirty āyāt. Let your last sounds before sleep be the ones the angels know. Yā Allāh, by Sūrat al-Mulk, by every night we recited it, by every night we wished we had, protect us from the punishment of the grave and make our resting place a garden among Your gardens. Āmīn.
