The Sunnah of Fasting in Shaʿbān


The hadith

مَا رَأَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ اسْتَكْمَلَ صِيَامَ شَهْرٍ إِلَّا رَمَضَانَ، وَمَا رَأَيْتُهُ فِي شَهْرٍ أَكْثَرَ صِيَامًا مِنْهُ فِي شَعْبَانَ

ʿĀʾishah narrated: 'I never saw the Prophet ﷺ fast a complete month except Ramadan, and I never saw him fast more in any month than he did in Shaʿbān' (Bukhārī 1969, Muslim 1156). And when asked why he fasted Shaʿbān so much, he ﷺ said: 'that is a month people neglect, between Rajab and Ramadan; it is a month in which deeds are presented to the Lord of the worlds, and I like for my deeds to be presented while I am fasting' (Nasāʾi 2357).

The story

Usamah ibn Zayd asked the Prophet ﷺ: 'Ya RasūlAllāh, I see you fasting in no month as much as you do in Shaʿbān.' He ﷺ replied: 'that is a month people neglect, between Rajab and Ramadan; it is a month in which deeds are presented to the Lord of the worlds, and I like for my deeds to be presented while I am fasting' (Nasāʾi 2357). The Companions noticed. The Prophet ﷺ's intensive Shaʿbān-fasting was a habit they recorded. Some scholars caution against fasting the second half of Shaʿbān (Abū Dāwūd 2337) unless joining a habitual fast; the discipline is to fast generously in the first half and ease into Ramadan.

Why it's here

Because the Prophet ﷺ, whose worship was structural and consistent, chose Shaʿbān as the month he fasted MOST after Ramadan. Why this specific month? He ﷺ gave the reason: 'a month people neglect, between Rajab and Ramadan.' The neglect of others increased his ﷺ engagement. And the second reason: 'deeds are presented to the Lord of the worlds in Shaʿbān.' The annual deed-review happens in Shaʿbān. The Prophet ﷺ wanted his deeds presented while he was fasting. This Sunnah, like the Monday-Thursday weekly deed-presentation fast (Day 215), is anchored in the cosmic accounting Allah does of His slaves.

Try it today

1) Mark the next Shaʿbān in your calendar; 2) Plan a fasting schedule: every Monday and Thursday at minimum; aim for more days if possible; 3) Audit your spiritual state in Shaʿbān; this is the month of deed-review; what would you want to be reviewed? Adjust the next two weeks of behavior; 4) Use Shaʿbān to prepare physically and spiritually for Ramadan: build the fasting muscle, deepen the Quran reading, plan the last-ten of Ramadan; 5) Refer to Bukhārī 1969 to remind yourself of the Sunnah's significance.

In your day

Plan Shaʿbān. Mark the month in your calendar. Build a substantial fasting practice during it: alternate days, Monday-Thursday consistently, or even most of the month if your body permits. The Prophet ﷺ modeled near-complete fasting; the practice should be inspirational but adjusted to your capacity. The intention: this is the month people neglect; let me not be one of them. And the deeper niyyah: my annual deeds are being reviewed; let me arrive at the review while fasting, in obedience, in the Prophet's ﷺ footprint.

A reflection to carry

ʿĀʾishah described the Prophet's ﷺ habit: 'I never saw him fast more in any month than in Shaʿbān.' When asked why, he ﷺ said: 'a month people neglect, between Rajab and Ramadan; deeds are presented to the Lord of the worlds in it; I like for my deeds to be presented while I am fasting.' Read those reasons. First: neglected. The Prophet ﷺ, who chose his worship with precision, deliberately intensified during a month when others were lax. Second: deed-presentation. Allah reviews the believer's annual deeds in Shaʿbān; the Prophet ﷺ wanted to be fasting at the review. Ya akhī, ya ukhtī, mark the next Shaʿbān. Plan a fasting schedule. Make it the month between Rajab and Ramadan where your fasting density rises. And use the month for spiritual audit: this is when your annual deeds are being reviewed; what would you want the reviewer to see? Adjust the remaining behavior of the month so the deed-presentation is favorable.

Yā Rabb, the Prophet ﷺ chose Shaʿbān as his most-fasted month after Ramadan. He named two reasons: neglect by others, and deed-presentation by You. Both are structurally important. The neglect of others is an opportunity: where others' worship dips, mine should rise. The deed-presentation is a cosmic moment: while my annual record is being reviewed, let me be fasting. Forgive me, ya Allāh, for the Shaʿbāns I have lived as ordinary months. Months between Rajab and Ramadan where I did not increase my worship despite the Prophet's ﷺ explicit model. Months when my deeds were being presented and I was not fasting at the moment of presentation. Plan the next Shaʿbān for me, ya Rabb. Make me wake for saḥūr on the Mondays and Thursdays, plus the white days, plus additional days. Make me audit my year during the month: what would You want me to clean up before the review? Reconciliations to make. Sins to repent. Sadaqahs to send. Duʿās to renew. Use the month as a runway to Ramadan. And on the year-end review when You audit my Shaʿbān, ya Allah, let me find that I followed Your Beloved's ﷺ footprint and was among the few who fasted in the month people neglect. Āmīn ya Samīʿ ya ʿAlīm.
