Fasting the Day of ʿArafah (Dhū al-Ḥijjah 9)
The hadith
The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Fasting the day of ʿArafah: I expect that Allah will expiate the previous year and the coming year for it' (Muslim 1162). One day. Two years of minor sins erased. And the day itself is the most powerful day for duʿā: 'the best duʿā is the duʿā of the day of ʿArafah; and the best thing I and the Prophets before me have said is: lā ilāha illa-llāhu waḥdahu lā sharīka lah, lahu al-mulku wa lahu al-ḥamdu wa huwa ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīr' (Tirmidhī 3585).
Svenska: Profeten ﷺ: 'Fastan på ʿArafah-dagen: jag hämtar från Allah att Han suger ut det föregående året och det kommande året.' (Muslim 1162)

The story
On the Day of ʿArafah of the Prophet's ﷺ farewell pilgrimage, Allah revealed: 'today I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favor upon you, and accepted Islam as your religion' (al-Māʾidah 5:3). The dīn was completed on ʿArafah day. ʿUmar later said: a Jewish man approached him and said: 'in your book there is a verse, if it were revealed in our community, we would make the day it was revealed an Eid.' ʿUmar asked which verse. He named al-Māʾidah 5:3. ʿUmar said: 'we KNOW that day; it is the day of ʿArafah of the year of the farewell pilgrimage' (Bukhārī 4606). The day is the completion-of-religion day. Fast it.
Why it's here
Because ʿArafah is the greatest day of the Islamic year. The Prophet ﷺ: 'There is no day on which Allah frees more slaves from the Fire than the day of ʿArafah; He descends and is proud of the people of ʿArafah, saying to the angels: what do these slaves want?' (Muslim 1348). The day is cosmic. The pilgrims stand at ʿArafah in white clothes, hands raised in duʿā, Allah's mercy poured over them. For non-pilgrims, the dīn opens a parallel door: fast the day, and the Prophet ﷺ expected expiation of TWO years of minor sins (the year before and the year after). The most generous fast-reward in the dīn. One day. Two years.
Try it today
1) Mark 9 Dhū al-Ḥijjah every year; 2) Plan the fast: suhoor, niyyah, daylight fast, iftar; 3) Maintain a duʿā list for the day (everyone you want to make duʿā for, every situation you want to ask Allah for); 4) Recite the prophetic duʿā-formula often throughout the day; 5) In the last hour before maghrib, intensify duʿā; this is the closing hour of the cosmic day; 6) Pair the fast with abundant istighfār; the year before's minor sins are about to be erased.
In your day
Mark 9 Dhū al-Ḥijjah in your calendar every year. If you are not on Hajj, fast it (pilgrims do NOT fast on ʿArafah; they stand in duʿā). For non-pilgrims, the fast is the parallel act. Plan suhoor, niyyah, daylight fast, iftar with dates. The duʿā on this day is uniquely powerful: from after fajr to sunset, increase duʿā (especially in the last hour before maghrib). The recommended formula: 'lā ilāha illa-llāhu waḥdahu lā sharīka lah, lahu al-mulku wa lahu al-ḥamdu wa huwa ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīr' (recite often). Make a full list of personal duʿās and bring them to Allah on this day.
A reflection to carry
Imagine the scene at ʿArafah. The pilgrims, two million strong, in white ihram, standing on the plain where the Prophet ﷺ gave his farewell sermon. The day Allah perfected the dīn. Allah is proud of them in front of the angels. He frees slaves from the Fire by the bucketful. And for the non-pilgrim, the dīn opens a parallel door: fast the day, and two years of minor sins are erased. Ya akhī, ya ukhtī, this is the most leveraged annual single-day fast in the entire calendar. One day. Two years. And the duʿā on this day is uniquely answered. The Prophet ﷺ described the best duʿā of all time as the duʿā of ʿArafah day. Mark 9 Dhū al-Ḥijjah. Fast it. Make a duʿā list a week in advance: every name, every situation, every hope you carry. Bring them to Allah on ʿArafah day. Watch your year transform.
Read the longer reflection
Yā Rabb, You completed the dīn on the day of ʿArafah. You revealed al-Māʾidah 5:3 there. You designated the day as the day Your mercy descends most abundantly, the day You free slaves from the Fire most, the day You are proud of Your servants in front of the angels. And You opened a parallel door for those of us not on Hajj: fast the day, and two years of minor sins are erased. Ya Allāh, this is the most generous annual fast in Your dīn. Forgive me, ya Rabb, for the years I have let ʿArafah pass without the fast and without the abundant duʿā that day permits. Mark the day on my calendar forever. Make me a believer who, on every 9 Dhū al-Ḥijjah of every remaining year of my life, fasts and pours duʿā like rain. Hand me my duʿā list. Place every name, every situation, every hope, in my hands as I stand in this cosmic moment. And ya Allāh, recite for me the Prophet's ﷺ formula: 'lā ilāha illa-llāhu waḥdahu lā sharīka lah, lahu al-mulku wa lahu al-ḥamdu wa huwa ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīr.' The best of the Prophets' words on the best of days. And let me find, every year on the day after ʿArafah, that two years of my minor sins are gone, that my duʿā list has begun to be answered, that my heart is lighter, my path clearer. Āmīn ya Tawwab.
