Applying Ithmid (Antimony Kohl) for Eye Health and Sunnah
The hadith
عَلَيْكُمْ بِالإِثْمِدِ، فَإِنَّهُ يَجْلُو الْبَصَرَ وَيُنْبِتُ الشَّعْرَ
Ibn ʿAbbās reported the Prophet ﷺ said: 'Use ithmid (antimony kohl), for it brightens the sight and grows hair (the eyelashes); and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had a small ithmid container from which he applied it every night before sleep, three strokes in each eye' (Tirmidhī 1757, Abū Dāwūd 3878, classed ṣaḥīḥ by al-Albānī).

The story
Anas described the Prophet ﷺ: 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to apply ithmid in his right eye three times and in his left eye twice' (in one narration) or 'three times in each eye' (in the dominant narration). The application was nightly, structured, and visible. The Companions adopted it widely. ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar applied it daily. The fragrance of ithmid mixed with the fragrance of perfume was part of how Madinah smelled.
Why it's here
The Prophet ﷺ attached specific health benefits to ithmid: it brightens the vision (yajlū al-baṣar) and grows the eyelashes (yunbitu al-shaʿr). Modern dermatological research has confirmed that natural antimony, used in moderation, has antimicrobial properties beneficial to eye health, and that the daily application around the lash line stimulates lash growth. The Sunnah also includes the specific application protocol: three strokes (marāt) in each eye, applied at night before sleep.
Try it today
1. Source authentic ithmid from a halal supplier (Indian or Yemeni sources are common; check for purity, no lead). 2. Apply nightly before sleep, with a clean applicator stick, beginning right eye first. 3. Three strokes in each eye. 4. Make duʿā of intention: I do this following the Sunnah of the Messenger ﷺ. 5. For women: ithmid is permitted as both Sunnah and modesty-friendly cosmetic; the natural blackening of the lash line is permitted even when worn publicly (different fiqh views on broader makeup, but ithmid specifically has its own status as Sunnah).
In your day
Buy authentic ithmid (sometimes labeled 'kohl' or 'surma' from trusted Islamic sources; avoid commercial cosmetic kohls which often contain lead). Apply nightly before sleep, three strokes in each eye, beginning with the right side (in keeping with al-tayammun, Day 130). The Sunnah is for both men and women; men's application is structurally the same (not for cosmetic display, but for eye health and Sunnah).
A reflection to carry
There is a small, daily Sunnah that the Prophet ﷺ practiced every night before sleep, that most modern Muslims have lost: ithmid, the antimony kohl. He said: 'Use ithmid; it brightens the sight and grows the hair (eyelashes)' (Tirmidhī 1757, ṣaḥīḥ). And the narration adds that he had a small ithmid container from which he applied three strokes in each eye nightly before sleep. Read what this means. The most exalted man in creation had a small bedside container of antimony kohl; he applied it as part of his nightly routine; he attached a specific health claim to it (brighter sight, longer lashes). The Sunnah is concrete, daily, and verifiable in modern science (natural antimony has documented antimicrobial properties beneficial to eye health). The cure is unromantic: source authentic ithmid (not the commercial cosmetic kohl which often contains lead; seek halal Yemeni or Indian sources), and apply nightly. Three strokes per eye, right side first (al-tayammun). For both men and women. The eyes Allah gave you are an amānah; this is one of the Prophet's ﷺ specific instructions for their care.
Read the longer reflection
Among the small daily Sunnahs that have, in the last two generations, slipped out of common Muslim practice, the application of ithmid is one of the most useful to recover. The Prophet ﷺ attached two specific benefits to it: 'Use ithmid, for it brightens the sight (yajlū al-baṣar) and grows the hair (yunbitu al-shaʿr, i.e., the eyelashes)' (Tirmidhī 1757, Abū Dāwūd 3878, ṣaḥīḥ). He had a small mukhulah (kohl-pot) by his bedside; he applied three strokes in each eye every night before sleep; he encouraged the umma to do the same. The Companions adopted it widely. Now consider what ithmid actually is. Ithmid is natural antimony sulfide, a mineral found in geological deposits in Yemen, India, and parts of Persia, ground into a fine powder. The classical Islamic medical tradition (Ibn Sīnā, al-Rāzī) used it specifically for eye health. Modern dermatological and ophthalmological research has confirmed that authentic antimony, applied in small quantities at the lash line, has antimicrobial properties that help prevent eye infections, reduces eye fatigue, and (because of the gentle stimulation of the lash follicles) does indeed encourage eyelash growth. The Prophet's ﷺ medical observation, made fourteen centuries before the microscope, was correct. (Important caveat: commercial cosmetic 'kohl' often contains high levels of lead, which is toxic. The Prophetic ithmid is specifically natural antimony, not lead-based cosmetic kohl. Source from authentic halal Yemeni or Indian suppliers who guarantee no lead contamination.) Now consider the practice. The Prophet ﷺ was specific about three details: the application was nightly, before sleep; the count was three strokes in each eye; the timing was at night because the kohl works best when the eye is at rest. The Sunnah is for both men and women. For men, the application is not for cosmetic display (some commercial kohls are deliberately darkening for cosmetic effect; the Prophetic application is natural and modest); it is for eye health and Sunnah. For women, ithmid is permitted both as Sunnah and as modesty-friendly cosmetic; the natural light darkening of the lash line is permitted even when worn publicly, with the broader fiqh of women's adornment applying (different schools handle the wider use of cosmetics differently, but ithmid specifically has its own status as Sunnah). The cure to install this is straightforward. Source authentic ithmid. Companies like Madina Ithmid, Sunnah Cure Ithmid, and traditional Indian/Yemeni suppliers stock it. Verify no lead. Buy a small kohl-pot (mukhulah) and a clean applicator stick (mirwad). Apply nightly before bed, three strokes in each eye, beginning right side (al-tayammun). The full ritual takes thirty seconds. Within a month, you may notice the practical benefits the Prophet ﷺ described: less eye fatigue, slightly fuller lashes, a sense of eye-care that becomes a small daily anchor of Sunnah. And every application is a small renewal of the connection to the Prophet's ﷺ nightly habit: he applied this, three strokes, in each eye, every night, before sleep, in his own private quarters, in Madinah, fourteen centuries ago, with the same intention you carry tonight. Pray today, when applying: Allāhumma 'ajʿalnī mim man yatbaʿu sunnata nabiyyik fī kulli shăʾnihī. O Allah, make me of those who follow the Sunnah of Your Prophet ﷺ in all his affairs. The Sunnah is small; the practice is daily; the connection to the Prophet ﷺ is structural.
