Saying the Full Salām Formula (Three Layers of Reward)

The hadith

السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ

A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said 'as-salāmu ʿalaykum.' The Prophet ﷺ returned the salām, then said: 'Ten' (i.e., this man earned ten rewards). Another came: 'as-salāmu ʿalaykum wa-raḥmatu-llāh.' The Prophet ﷺ: 'Twenty.' Another: 'as-salāmu ʿalaykum wa-raḥmatu-llāhi wa-barakātuh.' The Prophet ﷺ: 'Thirty.'

Profeten ﷺ: 'Tjugo.' En annan: 'as-salamu 'alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.' Profeten ﷺ: 'Trettio.' (Tirmidhī 2689, Abu Dawud 5195.)

The story

The Companions noted this hadith and trained themselves to give the full salām. The classical adab literature: the senior Companions consistently gave the full version (al-Bukhārī's chapter on salām collected multiple narrations affirming this).

Why it's here

The Prophet ﷺ established the structurally clear reward-graduation: 10 rewards for 'as-salāmu ʿalaykum,' 20 for adding 'wa-raḥmatu-llāh,' 30 for adding 'wa-barakātuh.' The cost difference between the short and the full version is 2 seconds; the reward-difference is 3x.

Try it today

1. Default to the full version: as-salāmu ʿalaykum wa-raḥmatu-llāhi wa-barakātuh. 2. Even if others give the short version, return with the full version (or at minimum, equal). 3. Train children to give the full version from young. 4. The 30-rewards-for-2-extra-seconds is structurally optimal effort-to-reward.

In your day

Modern speed-of-life often defaults to abbreviations. The discipline: give the full salām. Build the habit. The 3x reward-multiplier is structurally significant when accumulated across years.

A reflection to carry

The full salām formula: 10 rewards for as-salāmu ʿalaykum, 20 for adding wa-raḥmatu-llāh, 30 for adding wa-barakātuh. Default to full. (Tirmidhī 2689, ṣaḥīḥ.)

Read the longer reflection

The cost difference between short and full version is 2 seconds; the reward-difference is 3x. Cure: default to the full version; even if others give the short version, return with the full version (or at minimum equal); train children to give the full version from young; the 30-rewards-for-2-extra-seconds is structurally optimal effort-to-reward. Modern speed-of-life often defaults to abbreviations; the discipline is to give the full salām. Build the habit. The 3x reward-multiplier is structurally significant when accumulated across years of daily greetings.
