Remaining Seated in the Masjid in Dhikr After Fajr Until Sunrise
The hadith
The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Whoever prays Fajr in congregation, then sits remembering Allah until the sun rises, then prays two rakʿahs, will have the reward of a complete ḥajj and ʿumrah, complete, complete, complete.' (Sunan at-Tirmidhī 586, classed ḥasan; cross-ref Ibn Mājah, Tabarānī, narrated by Anas ibn Mālik ra.) Recommended every Fajr if feasible.
The story
The Prophet's ﷺ practice was to remain in his prayer-spot after Fajr until sunrise, often in dhikr, sometimes in conversation with Companions on matters of religion. Anas ra. preserved the reward statement (Tirmidhī 586). The Companions extended this practice into the Tabiʿūn era: the early masājid of Madinah and Kūfah were full of seated dhākirūn until sunrise. The practice was lost in many places under modern schedules but remains in the more disciplined masājid (especially in the Ḥaramayn and similar centers).
Why it's here
The practice is one of the most rewarded daily routines in the Sunnah: sit in the masjid after Fajr, in dhikr or recitation or reflection, until the sun rises (about 15-25 minutes after the Fajr congregation in most latitudes), then pray two rakʿahs (called salāt al-ishrāq or salāt aḍ-ḍuḥā in its earliest form). The reward named is ḥajj and ʿumrah complete, three times. The repetition of 'tāmmah, tāmmah, tāmmah' (complete, complete, complete) emphasizes that the reward is full, not partial.
Try it today
1. After praying Fajr in congregation, do not leave the masjid. Stay seated facing qiblah. 2. Recite the morning adhkār (the standardized ones from Ḥiṣn al-Muslim or similar). 3. Recite Quran during the remaining time. 4. Once the sun has risen visibly (about a spear's height above the horizon, ~15-20 minutes after sunrise time), pray two rakʿahs (ishrāq). 5. If 15-25 minutes is too long initially, start with 5-10 minutes; build up.
In your day
Most modern Muslims rush out of Fajr to start the workday or return to sleep. The Sunnah names a reward of ḥajj-and-ʿumrah-complete for staying. The cost is 20-25 minutes of dhikr. The cost-benefit is structural: this is among the highest reward-per-minute practices in the religion.
A reflection to carry
Sitting in the masjid after Fajr until sunrise: the same Sunnah as Day 6, here applied as masjid-specific. The structural reward (ḥajj + ʿumrah) per Tirmidhī 586. The masjid-anchored variant is preferred when possible.
Read the longer reflection
The Companions would gather in circles after Fajr in the masjid, reciting Quran, doing dhikr, discussing knowledge, until sunrise. The structural community-building was operational alongside the individual reward. Cure: when praying Fajr in the masjid, remain seated for dhikr until sunrise (15-20 minutes after); pray the two rakʿahs of Ishrāq; then continue your day. The combined daily session is approximately 60-90 minutes; the named ḥajj-and-ʿumrah-equivalent reward is structurally severe. Modern professional schedules often make this difficult on weekdays; build the discipline on weekends as foundation, then expand.
