Daily Duʿā' for the Family's Goodness
The hadith
Q 25:74: '[Believers] who pray, Our Lord, give us joy in our spouses and offspring. Make us good examples to those who are aware of You.' (Abdel Haleem). The Quran-taught du'a' of the 'ibād ar-Rahmān (servants of the Most Merciful) for their families. It asks for two things: joy in the family (qurrat a'yun) and leadership for the muttaqin.
Svenska: Q 25:74: '...som ber: Herre! Låt våra hustrur och barn skänka oss ögonens fröjd och gör att vi blir [goda] exempel för de gudfruktiga.' (Knut Bernström)
Q 25:74 (the Quran-taught du'a' of the 'ibād ar-Rahmān)
The story
The classical commentators note that this is the closing du'a' of a long passage describing the qualities of the 'ibād ar-Rahmān (Q 25:63-77). The qualities include walking in humility (Day 19 verse), spending modestly, refusing falsehood, and praying through the night. The closing du'a' for the family is the seal: those who have built these inner qualities then pray for the family they will lead.
Why it's here
Q 25:74 is the Quranic du'a' of the 'ibād ar-Rahmān (servants of the Most Merciful) for their families. It asks for two things: joy in the family (qurrat a'yun, 'coolness of eyes,' the Arabic idiom for a deep settled joy) and leadership for the muttaqin. The du'a' packages two goals into one sentence: a joyful family and a family that leads in righteousness.
Try it today
1. Memorize Q 25:74 in Arabic.
2. Recite it daily as part of morning adhkār or in the latter part of the night.
3. Add specific names: 'Yā Allāh, [child's name], [spouse's name], make them qurrat a'yun.'
4. Pair with action: small gifts, time, kindness, regular family meals. The du'a' is reinforced by the work.
In your day
Modern families often live in parallel rather than together. The daily du'a' for the family is one of the most underutilized binding agents. Recite it. Watch the connection deepen over months.
A reflection to carry
The duʿāʾ for the family: Q 25:74: 'Our Lord, grant us joy in our spouses and offspring, and make us examples for those who are aware of You.' The Quran-given family-duʿāʾ.
Read the longer reflection
The verse pairs family-joy (qurrat aʿyun) with community-leadership (imāman li-l-muttaqīn): the believer who asks for righteous family must also ask to be made worthy of leading the righteous. The two requests are integrated. Cure: recite this duʿāʾ daily, especially in sajdah and during the last third of the night; name your spouse and each child by name; be specific about what you ask for them. Modern marriage-and-parenting literature offers techniques; Q 25:74 offers the duʿāʾ. Techniques without duʿāʾ produce dunyā-results without barakah; duʿāʾ with techniques produces both.
